in view of the fact some teachers have said they'll boycott the tests, how does this work

 

maybe i'll try boycotting doing full days

SATS test were one of the very few things I enjoyed throughout my whole time at Primary and High School.

They are refusing to do them on the basis that it narrow the curriculum with students focusing more on the likes of English etc.

As I understand it the decision to boycott the SAT's are based on a number of points, the main being that the serve no real purpose and put 11yr old children under unnecessary pressure and stress for the results to be disregarded when they get to high school.

 

These test are basically there to asses how a school is achieving and to show that they are teaching the national curriculum to the governments instruction.

 

I have had both a brother and sister go through these exams in recent years and it effected both of them especially my young sister who got it into her head that if she didn't do well the SAT's exam she would not be able to go to the same school as her friends.

In what other industry would the management continually carry out pointless tasks year after year despite being told by all and sundry that said task was pointless and a waste of time, effort and money?

I Don't think I missed the point but maybe I could have addressed it a little better. A Major part of a teachers job especially at primary school level is to educate a child in a safe and stress free environment. the preparations for these test start when a child is 10 and the emphasis on the teaching from this point is to make sure the child succeeds by achieving a satisfactory grade. If teachers feel that this is being achieved at the expense of the child's comfort in learning and they feel that the stress caused to children to achieve these grades far out weighs the contribution these results make to a child future then I am all for them boycotting the tests. I don't feel that any teacher after the training and intrusion on there personal life to get where they are would boycotting these exams because they are lazy and can't be arsed.

 

Teaching is one of the industry where they are one on one with the pupil on a daily basis and can asses if it is in the child's best interest to go against someone sat in an office who has probably never done a days teaching in there lives and call there selves management.

I never said that teachers were lazy and couldn't be arsed; I know many good teachers. But no matter how good they are, they shouldn't just refuse to do their jobs.

With regards to training and intrusion you've got to do a number of years at college and university plus class room assistance and then shadow a full teacher for a certain amount of time, a friend of mine is taking an undergraduate degree at a university and a degree in primary education which incorporates work placement schemes and its expected to take about 4/5 years.

 

Before she was allowed anywhere near a class room She also had to have a number of assessments which included interviews asking about her private life and a number of police checks for any criminal records.

But just because they've done a few years in Education, had a CRB check etc and a bit of work experience, doesn't make them inherently not lazy either

I think this is the point we'll have to agree to disagree on Jules, As far as I know its been brought to the governments attention year on year for the past however many years that these tests have no real purpose and this boycott is basically the only step they have left to try and have there word heard. As with any industry when a workforce is ignored for so long, especially with a very valid point, they will take dramatic steps to be heard.
