Anyone been?

Basically, I'm stuck here in Tripoli, where it is alcohol free and as soon as I get my multiple re-entry visa through (probably after my christmas visit to the UK), I'm going to be jibbing off for weekends on the lash. I can get return flights to Luqa from Tripoli for around 100 quid with Libyan Arab Airlines and the flight is only 35 mins so this is an ideal place for a quick getaway. Any advice on where to go/stay much appreciated. The reviews on the net are a bit hit and miss it seems.

Also, Sicilly is around 1 hour flight and Djerba, Tunisia is around a 3 hour drive away.

Any info on any of these places muchly appreciated.

TIA

I've been to Tunisia once, I hated it.

Malta's nice but smells of old people's piss out of season, Sicily is beautiful in a bit of a run down sort of way.

HTH.

I went to Tunisia once, hated it too.

Taormina in Sicily is lovely. Lots of islands to go on boat trips to. Didnt go but I can imagine Palermo being an experience.

Tunisia's a marmite kind of place: you'll either love it or hate it.

I love it. Go and see the coliseum at El Djem and the caves at Matmata where Star Wars was filmed.

I went Tunisia with an Ex, She would not let me bum her, bitch.

I went with my ex husband & the locals wanted to bum me. They seem to like fat blonde bints & don't seem to understand the phrase "fuck off you creep".

True, they loved my Ex too. She was a big mama. In the nicest possible way !

Looks good, there's loads of sites here in Libya too, Oea, Leptis Magna and Sabratha (Tripolis) are full of ancient ruins from previous occupants and also Ghadames. Even the old Roman battle fort in Tripoli's Green Square is quite something and Marcus Aurelius' Arch which dates back to around 200 A.D.

It'll be nice to get away somewhere nearby though, for odd weekends where I can have a sup. :drinks:

Tunisia is a shit hole. Avoid. What industry are you in?

It can't be as bad as Libya, trust me on that!

Electronics, my company provides solutions for developing countries. We have offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and now Tripoli. (I drew the short straw) and we are hoping for Saudi and Bahrain early next year.

Around 90% of Ex-Pats here are in the Oil industry and they have a compound around 20km from the city centre.

Yeah I thought you might be in O&G! Should think your on a better rate for being based in Africa though? Some of Tunisia can be ok, it is basically a shithole full of French. To be fair from Tripoli you should have good range for most of North Africa, i.e, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt etc. Some good options. I was considering taking a position in Baku and was looking at 4 hour range flights for weekend trips.

Yeah, I can get to Rabat/Djerba/Cairo/Red Sea etc quite cheap and easily, I just fancied Malta as there is a Thursday flight at 14:15 and back Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. and it's only 35 mins. I'll look at other destinations once my visa's are done properly.

Funnily enough I was offered a post in Baku myself 2 years ago, but a post in The UAE came up at the same time, it was a no-brainer then.

Well if you head up to Malta, it's quite nice. The capital (Valetta) is very pleasant. Be sure to check out a boat trip up to Gozo and the 'Blue Lagoon'. Not sure what it would be like for drinking though, it's quite a modest Catholic country.

Jesus Juice ::lol::

Of the three he mentioned, I'd choose Malta. Had a great time in St. Pauls Bay and getting p1ssed is no problem. Even went to watch Sliema Wanderers play Hibernian.

Malta is very good. Locals love the Brits. Buggiba (sp)is a bit like blackpool with sun but does the job for a pissed up weekend. Sliema is probably the most "happening" place out of season though. Is the only real city.
