David Lacey tribute article in The Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/16/nat-lofthouse

"There were plenty of fellers who would kick your bollocks off. The difference was that at the end they'd shake your hand and help you look for them."

Interesting to see that PNE have posted an official tribute on the BWFC tribute site. I wouldn't be surprised if Tom Finney was behind that.

Just seen this link in our Book of Condolences. Cracking football song! We could do worse than adopt it as the official club anthem.

Another article in The Telegraph:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/bolton-wanderers/8262953/Nat-Lofthouse-was-heart-and-soul-of-Bolton-Wanderers.html

"If greatness of performance often lies partially in the mind, Lofthouse?s famous display against Austria in Vienna in 1952 was a prime example. In the preceding match against Italy in Florence he had failed to score, and a British news headline proclaimed: ?Fly Milburn out by comet for Vienna.?

Lofthouse would recall: ?I was so flaming mad, I?d given everything against Italy, and I determined that I would make the writer eat his words.?

MOTD 2 ended the programme with this tribute last night:

There was a lad from Bolton

Nat Lofthouse was his name

He used to work in a coal mine

But he reached the hall of fame

As the world of football came along

And took him out t'mine

And made the lad from Bolton

A legend in his time

He was the lion, the lion of Vienna

He was the lion, the pride of Lancashire

There'll be other centre forwards

And other football teams

But the lion of Vienna is the best there's ever been

A call from England came again to play on foreign soil

And England was his _________

And the Austrians would soon find out _________

It was Lofthouse pride of England

And a legend in his time

He was the lion, the lion of Vienna

He was the lion, the pride of Lancashire

There'll be other centre forwards

And other football teams

But the lion of Vienna is the best there's ever been

A match remained in deadlock

It looked an each-way bet

'til Lofty took a through ball

And crashed it in t'net

He's the Lion of Vienna

By the _________

He's England's centre forward

And a legend in his time

The game of football's changed a bit since I were a little lad

With a scarf and rattle in me hand cheering with me Dad

And gone are the days of the old brass band and Lofty in his prime

He were England's centre forward and a legend in his time

He was the lion, the lion of Vienna

He was the lion, the pride of Lancashire

There'll be other centre forwards

And other football teams

But the lion of Vienna is the best there's ever been

He was the lion, the lion of Vienna

He was the lion, the pride of Lancashire

There'll be other centre forwards

And other football teams

But the lion of Vienna is the BEST THERE'S EVER BEEN

Excellent tribute on Granada tonight. Had lump in my throat
