Private prescriptions on the NHS...

As many of you know, my youngest is a student down in Exeter...
So, he needed some meds, but had to see a doc to get a diagnosis and subsequent prescription to get the meds he needs.

Sadly the waiting lists for even an appointment are horrific, so the Uni funded a private consultation.
The private doctor diagnosed and issued the prescription.

All good so far, but the meds are £150 a month on a private script.

He says the local GPs won't now give him an NHS prescription for the same meds, even though they accept the validity of the diagnosis.

This can't be right, can it?
Or is there a way round this?

It all depends what type of meds they are Traf. If it's something like ADHD meds for example - a lot of GPs won't touch it - even with a diagnosis from a specialist clinic.

If you feel comfortable PMing me the details - I'll ask some of my pharmacy friends next week for you.

Hope she gets sorted......!

Seen a fair few gavibv the issue when they've gone private and GPs refuse to work with then.

I'm on the wait list for an Autism/ ADHD diagnosis (more the latter) but I've avoided going private for that reason.

I think my middle un and your youngest might be very similar… dunno what I can add, but just wish you the very best. I’ll gladly keep you posted, but I’m guessing I’m years behind you.

I can imagine the frustration and despair you’re feeling as a parent so far away. Mine has left college and doesn’t know where they fit in this world; got a job at Iceland and told not to bother after 1.5 shifts at a site that didn’t even hire them! They are crushed.

I hope he is ok, you know this place will help in anyway it can.

Don’t rub GP with a bloon though

Had this with my youngest

It all depends on what the local ICB (Integrated Care Board) have on their list of reimbursed drugs ie what the locality will pay for on the NHS

A diagnosis can be accepted but, basically, if the drug isn’t on the approved prescribing list, then the GP can’t give out a prescription. Not their fault at all. Their hands are tied.

This is the twist. The specialist or private GP can recommend the best drug possible for the condition but NICE/the NHS won’t pay for it for various reasons

Maybe raise a case with the ICB in Exeter? Cost of prescribing vs cost of care vs non-prescribing

If you name the meds you need I'll 100% be able to get em.

That's definitely my Plan B.
