The World Cup should be a World Cup ie qualifiers should be done in global groups, none of this seperate qualifying for Europe, Asia, South America etc.

 

There are 205 teams eligible to compete for 2006, of which there are 32 places less one for the hosts.

 

There should be a place for the holders, leaving 30 places to be competed for by 203 nations.

 

The top 51 ranked nations would not play in the first qualifying phase and the other 152 would each play a 2-legged tie, randomly drawn against one of the other 151 teams.

 

This leaves you with 76 teams plus your top 51 = 127 teams still going for 30 places.

 

Then we go for 20 groups: 13 groups of 6 and 7 groups of 7. Each group would contain 1 team from the top 20 rankings and 1 team from the 21 to 40 rankings.

The 20 group winners would qualify and the 20 runner-ups would be drawn against each other in a two-legged play-off tie.

If the rankings are realistic, the 20 group winners should be the top 20 nations and the runners-up should be the next 40.

 

This gives you your 30 qualifying teams, of which most of them will be ranked in the world's top 40, eliminating the shite that the World Cupis blighted with.

 

A top 40 nation would then have a maximum of 14 games in qualification. This is more than the Europeans play at present, but all games would be competitive fixtures instead of the meaningless friendlies we play.

Nice idea but the system that creates those rankings is a crock of shite and would need sorting first.

Europeans and South Americans do best so surely they should get more qualifying spots, on say a points basis like the champios league places.
