Recently my internet has gone quite slow and often drops the connection. What can be done to: (a) find out where the problem is and (B) fix it.

who is ur isp?

Is it cable modem / adsl?

?

could send me ur ip, see if its dropping any packets. One thing, just power off, leave it disconnected for 10-20 mins then restart modem ( normally works best with cable modem) could be you have a 'dead ip'

The speed seems OK, it just keeps dropping the connection.

is it a wireless connection??

Ocassionally mine keeps dropping connection, but blame the wireless network, they do this occasionally.

At the risk of sounding a complete numpty, how do I find out my own IP address?

Being a mod on here you should know how to find someone's IP address. In the corner of one of your posts they should be an IP link, along with quote, and edit.

:-$

I know that, but there's a list of about 20 IP addresses next to my name!

That's because you have posted on here off different computers. You should be able to work out which is your home connection because you would of made more post from there than any other.

Ignore these amateurs!

Your ip address may change at any time unless you've paid for a static IP.

The problem could be your exchange, your phoneline, your router, your cable, your PC or your ISP (plus owt I've forgotten). Your job is to eliminate each one.

Well you learn something new everyday!

I'd just about worked out that the changes in IP must mean it's dynamic and not static, but that's about as far as I've got.

My PC is fine and my ISP is fine. The manufacturers of the router have got me to download some new firmware settings (whatever that means), so I'm doing that. There is "noise" on my landline, so I was wondering if that might be causing me any grief.

have they conducted a line test?

BT should sort it ( as most adsl is running along bt's kit ).

You sent me your ip on friday but aint been online since so not much use except to see who ur isp is.

Pretty much as you've said. BT are "investigating"

For future reference :-

from the start menu, click on run. Type in the box that appears cmd

A black DOS box will appear with a prompt, type in ipconfig /all

This will tell you everything you need to know about your connection.

I have had the problem you have described, the recent cold snap with deep penetrating frosts (the Reebok variety) has probably opened up an existing problem with your line. Mine used to go every time it rained heavily.
