This is due to mismanagement of the capital. Nowadays what gets paid in just goes straight out to pay the current pensioners. As regards me getting more back than the 11%/ month I'm paying in, let's be honest, if I paid the same amount into a savings account I'd be getting more back. The only bit of your money I'll ever see is possibly a bail-out from the Govt. when the fire service pension scheme goes belly up. Rather me get it than waste a few million quid on one or two extra bombs to Iraq! Many other public sector workers get a non-contributary pension. I'd like one of those please. That's where I had to get the train to for my last selection where a minibus whisked us off into the sticks. Christ, what an armpit. What I was saying about the investing is, in the early days of the Fire Service Pension Scheme, retired Firefighters had a fairly low retirement age but also had a fairly low mortality age. Had the poweres-that-be invested all the pension income then instead of 'borrowing' it to pay off capital expenditure, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in now. In 1974 the UK Fire Service recruited heavily. It doesn't take a brainbox to work out that, thirty years later the pension scheme would be crippled by this massive intake all retiring at the same time, does it? Another disparity between firefighters and other public service workers is that, while the Govt. have attacked their pension schemes as well, they have actually ringfenced existing workers. i.e. the pension scheme you joined will be the one you retire with. New recruits will be offered a different one. With the Fire Service, however, the scheme I joined is to be altered. Start looking forwards to the next strike. This thime though there'll not be enough armed service personnel to crew the fire engines. . .oh, that's another Govt. run department f??cked as well! Have you heard about that mate of Maggie's who gets NINETY days off this year? How mnay of them he plans to spend moonlighting as a taxi driver I'm not sure.
