Be honest, football???s boring isn???t it?

 

I???m not talking specifically about Bolton, but about football in general. Match day at the Reebok will always have the sounds, the smells and the atmosphere to make it a good day out whatever is served up on the pitch. It???s our team and the majority don???t especially care how we win as long as we win.

 

But take your BWFC-tinted specs off for a minute and look at the bigger picture. In 20 years time when the money has dried up and TV companies are spending their money elsewhere what will be left of the beautiful game? Not a lot I suspect.

 

Gone are the days when flair players were encouraged to express themselves. Back in the day we didn???t care if our right-winger couldn???t tackle or track back, as long as he beat three defenders and delivered a good cross we were happy. But nowadays it???s all about strength, the kids of today are being brought up thinking football is all about the right diet, having a flat stomach and being able to jump 5 feet in the air. Where would a great ball-player like Tony Kelly be, had he been born 15 years later? The truth is he would never have made it past Sunday League.

 

The 4-5-1 formation may have been a success for Bolton, but isn???t playing just one striker detrimental to the future of our game? Before long playing with a lone forward will be the norm and gone will be the days of the strike partnership. Where would Walker & McGinlay, Wright & Bright, Quinn & Phillips have been in a 4-5-1 formation? The answer is nowhere.

 

While I am chuffed at Bolton???s current position amongst the elite, I fear for the entertainment value of football in the future. In years gone by if Chelsea had been playing Everton on TV I???d have cancelled everything to watch it, nowadays I???ll watch it only if there???s nothing else on. You know what sort of game it???s going to be, why bother watching it as you???re bound to catch the goals on the news later on.

 

And we can???t even blame the foreigners for this one. Allardyce at Bolton, Bruce at Birmingham, Hughes at Rovers, Moyes at Everton are all British and all responsible for the ???entertainment??? being served up in the Premiership. We tend to mock teams like Spurs and West Ham for their lack of success despite their ???big-club??? claims. But perhaps we should take a leaf out of their book ??? their fans won???t accept anything other than entertaining football even if it means defeat after defeat. Those that have tried anything else have soon felt the backlash from the fans.

 

I???m not saying Allardyce should change his formation to 4-2-4 as we would no doubt face relegation. But long-term the game has to realise that it is in the entertainment business. The TV money might not always be there to keep clubs afloat, one day they may again have to rely on entertainment to get bums on seats. Could they do it? Not in its present state.

Attendances are down in the Premiership, season ticket sales for the 2006-07 season are poor at most clubs because of the standard on offer. Yes, it???s expensive to watch Premiership football, but if you were seeing great games every week the punters would pay whatever they were asked.

 

Once the punters lose interest so will Sky and other tv companies.

Attendances are down in the Premiership, season ticket sales for the 2006-07 season are poor at most clubs because of the standard on offer. Yes, it???s expensive to watch Premiership football, but if you were seeing great games every week the punters would pay whatever they were asked.

 

Once the punters lose interest so will Sky and other tv companies.

 

Attendences may be down but subscrition to sky sports and prem plus etc is on the up year on year!

No moaning about the f*cking weather (like the good old England squad) and no magazine spreads featuring their stupid preggers bints smiling away while spending fans hard-earned money on designer bags (after all, we pay the f*cking wages).

 

Her indoors got one of her magazines the other day, and Anton Ferdinand was in it about some 'win a date with.........' competition. F*cking hell - is that what footballers are all about now? Poncing around getting their locks dyed and advertising moisturisers - it's no wonder they're all so scared of getting tackled on the pitch nowadays.

 

A footballer gets touched and he's on the floor for 10 minutes, the stretcher is on & then play can FINALLY resume. WTF is all that about??? You can argue the South Americans started it, but every team around is at it now, mincing around on the deck and then squaring up to each other but never actually throwing a f*cking punch.

 

Even the WC is w*nk now, I'd sooner back an African team than anyone else. At least they're actually getting stuck in, unlike w*nkers like Ashley Cole, who's too worried about breaking a f*cking nail.

 

That's my rant over anyway, if football carries on the way it is I'm sure the bubble will burst and more people will want to watch an actual sport; as opposed to some non-contact exhibition with a load of gays wearing make-up juggling the ball & listening to pundits licking their brown rings afterwards.

Football will always be around, just expect it to get more 'Italian' as the years go by.

 

I'm just saying lads like me will get sick of it, most people I know go for the beer & the day out with the lads than the actual match. And once upon a time football grounds had an atmosphere you know (that might shock some of the younger posters).
