The 2 -17 year old lads that beat to death the 51 year old bloke in preston are due to be sentenced today in preston youth court. I think they should be charged as adults and put into the big boys prison, after all, were not talking about nicking a car here, or breaking an ASBO, were talking murder. And personally i want them to be totally intimidated in a prison full of older folk.

 

Another news article this morning relates to the extensive overcrowding of youth prisons, they are basically bursting at the seams, with adults prisons also overcrowded and other options such as 'floating prisons' being considered, what on earth do we do with them all??

Don't 17yr olds get sentanced as juveniles and then get moved to adult prison when they are 18, it sounds right to me.

You are looking at it from an emotional point of view, the judges follow the rule book and that is the way it has to be. They don't spend much time thinking about the victim or the victim's family.

I don't know anything about this case that you are talking about but I know there are a lot of crazy people out there and I wouldn't like to be one of the judges in front of them. If you put Mr.Average Joe Public in that position instead of the judge or law makers, we would have sentances of life in prison while being tortured daily or slow painful deaths etc. etc.

There is never any real justice with these things. It's a cruel world.

You are right but tell why they are not allowed to hear about or take into account the feelings and views of the victim yet the defence lawyer of the offender can offer a diatribe of how poor Johnny's shit life, drug /drink problem, poor upbringing explains his misdemeanors and thus effect to reduce his sentence?

Over the years there has been a lack of investment in building and staffing of prisons. The number of prisons has not kept pace with the dynamic increase in population over the last 60 years.

The trouble with sticking a younger and probably more naive person in an adult jail is that you are placing them in with the experienced criminals who can teach them worse ways.

 

Its a difficult one really, they need to be punished for their crimes but i am starting to get the opinion that prisons are clearly not the way forward for most of them.

Ptisoners aged 15 - 17 are juveniles, 18 - 21 young adult offenders, over 21 adults, undr 21's for murder get sentenced at Her Majesty's Pleasure (HMP) which is an indeterminite sentence, he/she is mollycoddled to f'uck for a few years until he's better. Adults get 'Life' for murder but I did 18 years and every f'ucking one got out before me

bit wierd really that you can get married at 16 ( with parental permission), have sex legally at 16, have kids even earlier yet not be allowed to vote/get a mortgage until youre 18 years old. Going off on a tangent now- but at 16 years old i had left home, supported myself financially with no benefits ( ie- paid my own rent/council tax/utility bills/dental bills etc), put myself through college etc- but wasn't classed as an adult- as far as im concerned that was an insult to the efforts i made to be responsible,independant and mature.

On the other hand there were older folk who made none of those efforts-but their opinions counted more than mine as they were 18 or over.

Was a bummer at the time, but looking back- i reckon that gave me an edge than many other people older than me didnt have. Determination.

I still stand by my opinion that the murdering scum i originally mentioned in this post conducted their actions as adults and should be tried as such.

Yes- some people have has crappy upbringings- however- this system has been abused time and time again- it is used as an excuse for horrible behaivour. I had a poor upbringing ( financially wise- not love and affection wise), i had some really shitty life experiences, but i chose to be a decent person, and take responsibility for my actions. I cannot blame my actions on my mothers parental skills ( because she was and is an exceptional woman), nor can i blame anything on the fact that i had an 'absent father' or witnessed and endured things that children should not.

There comes a time when people- regardless of their childhood- take responsibility for themselves and the way they conduct themselves. Folk who suffer because of their past can choose to wallow in it and use it as an excuse to fail, or can be bigger and better and move on.

I know which path i choose to travel, and get really, really pissed at folk who use the past to vindicate shite behaivour.
