WANDERERS' manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed that Chelsea could make a renewed bid for Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim before the January transfer window closes at midnight on Wednesday.

 

Ben Haim pulled out of Wanderers' FA Cup draw against Arsenal on Sunday after picking up a calf strain in training the day before the game.

 

Allardyce said:

 

"Tal failed a fitness test this morning having picked up an injury.

 

"Tal determined he would not play. We were disappointed but if a player says he is not fit to play, he is not fit to play.

 

"My chairman is in Australia and I only spoke to him a few minutes ago and he's had no contact from anybody. I hope it's like Tal tells me and it's just a genuine injury."

 

With Chelsea seemingly still looking at a stopper to bolster their defence, Big Sam has warned Chelsea it would take a substantial improvement on that bid to persuade him to sell.

 

"If there is a big bid coming, it will have to be really big," Allardyce said.

 

"It will cost them much more now than it would have done three weeks ago because there are only two days for me to get a replacement.
