I know that we picked up the 3 points but I've got to admit I was a bit surprised / disappointed with the way that we played. We have obviously enjoyed a lot of success hitting long 'passes' to Davies but given his absence and the nature of the Watford's centre backs I thought we might have changed our approach for this one. At times our passing was too good for Watford but then we'd hit a long ball up for Stelios / Diouf to try and win. Yes we won today, but I'm not convinced the tactics will get the same result against the better teams we face over the next few weeks. Your thoughts please?

i think the main problem was it was dire to watch. other than that good result even if we nearly threw it away

By better teams i presume you mean Arsenal and the likes. If so they will let us play abit more where teams like Watford, Charlton etc dont give us time on the ball esp Campo and so we start to get the ball forward early. Plus the bigger and better the team the better our big game players play.

Yesterday was a great 3 points and to be honest we didnt really look like conceding. But i suppose there will be those not happy because we didnt play open entertaining football and win 5-0

yesterday we had 64% possession, the highest in all the games played

 

watford had 0 attempts on goal, we got 3 points and a clean sheet

 

week before we got a draw at arsenal

 

looks to me like horses for courses and more often than not we get it right

 

our styles against villa and city away in december were quite different and again, 3 points on both occasions

 

i have no problem with this

Couldnt agree more. 3 points is 3 points sooner win ugly than lose entertainingly(if thats a word)

Bollox. Life under McGovern was worse than the Phil Neal era.

I agree on the winning ugly point of view, but I think the thing is that it was poor to watch on Saturday AND we almost didn't win. We created very little, although we were never in any real danger at the back ourselves.

 

I thought the midfield were a little tentative in joining the attacks and supporting the front men; the concensus from around where we were sat is that Watford were so poor that if we'd have gone for the jugular and really attacked them, we may have conceded some chances and maybe even a goal, but we'd have easily put 3 or 4 past them.

 

Basically, I believe that if we'd have played "less ugly" we'd have actually had a better chance of winning on this occasion. However, I appreciate it's not always so and we did get away with it.

That was exactly how I saw it Jules. I have no problem with playing ugly when it is the most effective approach, but on Saturday it was pretty obvious that we would have done better keeping the ball on the ground. The only thing the Watford centre backs can do is head the ball .... and when you've got Stelios rather than Davies challenging it just doesn't make sense.

 

Ugly works a lot of the time but the horse for Saturday's course was fast free flowing football which Watford would not have been able to cope with.
