Leicester manager Gary Megson is the front-runner to become the new Bolton manager, BBC Sport understands.

Graeme Souness was interviewed for the post last week but Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has confirmed the Scot is not interested in succeeding Sammy Lee.

 

Now Gartside looks set to turn to Megson and he is believed to be prepared to pay ?300,000 to get him.

The only way I could see Megson getting the job is if Gartside plans on leaving very, very soon.

Megson did an excellent job to start with at West Brom.He was the manager who ended their 16 year exile from the top flight and he did it without money.

 

They did badly in the Premier League though and went straight down with only 26 points.The lack of a decent striker was the problem.Their top scorer Danny Dichio only scored 5 and Jason Roberts managed 3.

 

Megson took them straight back up the following sreason and was then sacked in October after falling out with the board.

 

He'd be a vast improvement on the laughable Lee appointment,but his track record would be good for a team wanting promotion,not one in the position we are in.

Let us be clear about this - Megson is only making the noises at the moment as we are being refused permission to speak to him and Leicester are making this known to the press.

 

In the meantime the likes of Jewell, Dowie and others may have had 1 or 2 interviews for the job but we just don't know about it.

Megson's a proper manager....Lee is a nice man but will never be a manager.

Megson could start an argument in an empty room, his man-management skills are non-existent. If Lee couldn't handle the players, then i doubt he can.

Megson was interviewed on SSN. He said that he didn't want to go for an interview at Bolton if he wasn't going to be offered the job, as then he would have to come back to Leicester and face the fans. Let's just hope that we don't do what we did with Allardyce and tell him that the job's his if he quits Leicester.

On the other hand,he did well at Stockport.

"Well" is possibly over the top.

 

I was actually quite impressed with Megson at West Brom. Thought he came across as no dud in interviews and got them promoted again after relegation which many clubs fail to do.

 

However there's far too much dross in his career for him to be considered a decent manager.

Are you all missing the worst bit on this story.

I suspect it goes something like :-

1) can work on small budget

2) won't argue with the owner/board

3) low salary

4) is available

5) if not available, then cheap to get

Don't see ambition or top-level achievement being in there, but hope PG proves me wrong. We'll soon know IMHO.

Half agree. Forgot about 'willing to cut the salary budget in January'.

But 'keep us hope' is an objective, not a selection criterion.
