he infamous moment that Malarchuk is perhaps most known for occurred during a game on March 22, 1989, between the visiting St. Louis Blues and Malarchuk's Buffalo Sabres. Steve Tuttle of the Blues and Uwe Krupp of the Sabres collided at the mouth of the goal, and Tuttle's skate caught Malarchuk on the neck, slicing open his internal carotid artery.

 

With pools of blood collecting on the ice, Malarchuk somehow left the ice under his own power with the assistance of his team's athletic trainer, Jim Pizzutelli, ATC. Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight, with nine fainting and two suffering heart attacks while three teammates vomited on the ice. Local television cameras covering the game cut away from the sight of Malarchuk after realizing what had happened.

 

Malarchuk, meanwhile, had only two thoughts: He was going to die, and he had to do it the right way. "All I wanted to do was get off the ice", said Malarchuk. "My mother was watching the game on TV, and I didn't want her to see me die.

 

Malarchuk's life was saved by Jim Pizzutelli, ATC, the team's athletic trainer and a former army medic who had served in Vietnam. He reached into Malarchuk's neck and pinched off the bleeding, not letting go until doctors arrived to begin suturing the wound. Still, Malarchuk came within minutes of becoming only the second fatality to result from an on-ice injury in NHL history (the first was Bill Masterton).

 

Amazingly, after receiving more than 300 stitches to close the wound, Malarchuk returned to practice four days later, having spent only one night in the hospital. And about a week after that, he was back in goal against the Quebec Nordiques. "Doctors told me to take the rest of the year off, but there was no way", Malarchuk said. "The longer you wait, the harder it's going to be. I play for keeps."

Ice hockey players are a different breed of sports men, I?ve seen them having cuts stitched up on the bench (no anesthetic) then back on without missing a shift, saw one guy at Altringham years ago playing for the aces, go down to block a shot, got him straight in the gob, blood and teeth everywhere, picks himself and his teeth up of the ice, skates to the bench, hands his teeth to the coach and goes back out to finish his shift, finishes is shift back to the bench put's his teeth back in place and then waits for is turn to go back on the ice again, if a player misses a shift he?s hurt bad if he does not return to the game its bloody serious.

What about that egg-chaser who had his ball-sack ripped open, he had it sewed back together then went back on to finish the game.

I too have suffered a graze on astro turf and I'd say, Mr bloody Tyldesley white, that you have never been thus grazed yourself otherwise you'd bloody well know that Eduardo's recent injury is small-time in comparison!

Oh I've had a few off Oldhams Astro turf thanks very much, it was not the grazing that I found painful it was getting the bloody sand out that hurts

How many have just breathed in heavily through clenched teeth?

When I was running up to bowl, I once swallowed a midgie at Eagley CC........spewed mi ring up, the tickly little bastard.

tore all the ligaments in my right ankle playing footy thought i'd just gone over on it, stood up fell straight back over.

 

Now that hurt!

Yep, cruciate ligament when I was 19. Feckin hurt, surgeon told me it was the equivalent to childbirth pain - thank Christ it only lasted for about 30 secs!!!
