Right then, here's my guide to Lisbon...

 

There's an area called Bairro Alto which is the "high town", it's not far from the centre, next to the shops in Baixa. BUT this place is basically loads of small interlinked streets with traditional houses that open up as bars on the ground floor at night, you will struggle to get a drink there by day!!! By night, people stand out on the streets drinking Super Bock. The biggest bar at the top of the hill is a bummer bar, I think, TSO knows it well I believe.

 

There are these bonkers shops on Rossio Sq and just past the Benfica shop off there that sell cups of cherry brandy for a Euro if you want to get lashed on the cheap. I think I saw a Rock Hard Cafe on there, plus there's Restaurantadors to eat and drink. The place isn't THAT big.

 

I only saw one Irish bar, for those that way inclined, on Avenida 26th July, heading to Belem.

There is an Irish bar right on the front overlooking the bridge but bit away from the hussle and bussle of the centre.

 

There are two huge squares to take over (depending how many we take) - one right in the centre of the city (with a fountain), with all the shops etc around - Praca Da Figueira. The other is over looking the coast - this is huge (if we have a footy) and often have outdoor music - Praca do Comercio

The only problem with staying central (ie squares) is that there are no bars. As Carlos said the little bars (if you can call them that) are in Bairro Alto! up one side of the valley.

 

One of the best places for booking decent hotels cheaply is travelrepublic on the tinterweb. I stayed in a 5star one in lisbon a couple of weeks ago called Real Palacio (quality). It is now showing at ?47 pp, (based on 2 sharing)

Staying on that Rui Da Sao Juliao. Looks a good 'un. (2 back from the commercial square in Baixa). Are there any 'blue' venues in the surrounding area?

I reckon that the streets heading down to Placa do Com?rcio that are full of cafes will be the best place to get drinks by day? This is Baixo, the shops are in Chiado then it's Bairro!
