At the end of the Sporting Lisbon game,my first thoughts were we must get a result at wigan and Megson knows what he is doing.

 

What a waste of time.

 

I loved my experience in Lisbon apart from the lack of respect given by Megson to fans in Lisbon or at home in leaving is entire 1st team squad at home .

 

Our 1st team has hardly played over the last few weeks.

 

If playing reserve players was to rest 1st team players or to avoid injuries,it hasn't worked at all.

 

We have had no continuity in the last few weeks.

 

We should be keeping the same out there subject to injuries,suspensions or players out of form.

 

Megson doesn't know what he is doing at the moment and is on thin ice.

Turned out to be a waste of time resting them.Even with an extra man our slow,overweight midfield couldn't match their energy.

 

But,to suggest that team would win away at Sporting Lisbon is wishful thinking.

 

If we go down Megson must be sacked.He spent around ?12 million and we still don't have one pacy midfielder or striker who can harm teams.Wigan's two pacy black midfielders were both in our price range.But he went for defensive players and a dud from Portsmouth instead

 

He doesn't deserve the opportunity to correct his mistake of not buying attacking players if we drop.

Lisbon were not that good.

 

I also believe that a few players that were rested would love to have played.

Some of them might not get the chance to play in europe and then they are

expected to play against Wigan.

 

The management has got it all wrong and prevented the fans and some of

the players of living a dream.

 

I will personally never forgive Megson for that.

as manager megson has to make desicions, he does not have the benefit of hindhsight

 

i have to say i never thought about how the players would feel about being left out of such a big game.

 

his desicion has totally back fired, so has to take responsibility for that.

 

by sacrificing europe he put all his eggs (pies ??) in one basket.

 

 

he has fucked up most royally either in terms of team selection or man management of the issue.

What is the point of supporting a team in the bottom half of the premiership ?

We play scratch sides in the FA and Carling cup and get knocked out.

Embarrassing and people wont come and watch.

 

We play 9 games in europe and then toss it away. (think of all the money spent going to

those 5 away games - and for what ?)

 

You play in the premiership to get into europe. (and then to throw it away !!)

 

At lease in the championship, you focus on the cups (ala Barnsley, Cardiff and WBA) and

you have excitement that you are playing for the holy grail - promotion to the

premiership.

 

The financial implications of falling out of the prem are terrible and looking at big teams that

have done it, makes it seem bleak. (Forest, Leeds, Leiciester, Coventry etc etc)

 

I don't know what the answer is, but it all seems that what we are aiming for is pointless.

The negativity and "lose at all costs" mentality may be fine in principal but it is not going

to bring through the next generation of supporters.

 

To this end the big 4 (and maybe a couple of others) will get bigger and the rest will continue in the trend that is growing.

 

Have Derby enjoyed the premiership ?

After a few years in the prem, scrimping and scraping results week in, week out starts

to lose the appeal. Then trying to justify ?40 to watch another "resiliant" display ie backs to the

wall for 90 minutes becomes near on impossible.

 

I love my club, but I feel rock bottom and can't see the way forward.

What a club Bolton Wanderers must be to disregard the UEFA Cup. Disparaged as also-rans, a little 'un from the north east, Bolton must be a club of hitherto-unappreciated prestige if they can disregard a competition that little-known outfits such as Juventus, Bayern Munich, Parma, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Valencia and Sevilla have all considered worthy of collection in the last 15 years. Perhaps they simply don't possess enough space in their trophy cabinet to accommodate yet another piece of silverware. After all, it's 50 years since Bolton last won the FA Cup and can you imagine the weight of the dust that has accumulated since then?

 

Of course, no matter what Bolton did, they probably wouldn't have had to bother with the inconvenience of a European final. But at least they could have tried. At least they could have picked a side that had a hope of stopping Sporting Lisbon. Instead, having described the competition as a "pain in the arse", Gary Megson opted to rest nine players and bring in nine players that only a few people outside of the HR department at the Reebok would be familiar with. Megson must have been the first manager in history to be aghast when he saw a makeshift team comprised of never-weres and never-will-bes almost prevail. He insisted that he didn't feel "relief" at being knocked out after the 2-1 aggregate defeat but his teamsheet told a tale in which he hoped for no other conclusion.

 

Megson's excuse remains that Premier League survival must be his priority. Fair enough. But given that Bolton were afforded a two-week break from league action in order to devote sufficient attention to their European commitments could Megson have not selected even a small number of first-teamers? For a club to turn its back on the biggest stage of its history - Bolton have never progressed so far in Europe before - tells a bleak story of its mentality. Bolton's ambitions go no further than staying in the Premier League. No wonder nobody turns up to watch.

 

The delicious irony is that Megson's policy - and one which was no doubt approved by the club's hierarchy - backfired spectacularly against Wigan. Undone by inactivity and rustiness after spending a week with their feet up, the nine players recalled for duty were way off the pace and second best. "We've rested players midweek for this game and clearly it hasn't worked because we didn't turn up or start well. We looked lethargic and leggy and weren't good enough and we are right in the cart," Megson remarked in a series of quotes bound to be read with particular interest by the Bolton supporters who took the trouble of travelling to Portugal in midweek only to find the club's star players had not.

 

Now six points adrift of Wigan and marooned in the bottom three, it would be one of the highlights of the season if Bolton's lack of ambition was a pivotal influence in causing their relegation in two months' time.

 

Whats frustrating is that the Bolton fans agree with most of this, yet we get lumped in with the managerial shambles!
