But 69 seasons of top level football, even though the size of the town and the level of support haven't changed much over the years. Ranking us 12th in the top-level stakes.

Yeah, that total is partly because we were founder members of the Football League (due to the ambition of the people then running the club); but only Everton, Villa and WBA (by 2 seasons) of the founder members are higher than us.

Which maybe shows that, as a club, our tradition is to 'punch above our weight'. Or at least, to quote Satan, "just goes to show ..... er ..... summat or other".

My theory is that being in the hotbed of English football (the North West) makes it easier to keep standards up but lowers the crowds.
