Megson On Changes

GARY MEGSON has revealed that a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes over the summer to improve the Club's infrastructure.

 

The Wanderers boss and his players are currently in Austria on a pre-season training camp, where they are busy preparing themselves for the new campaign which gets underway in little more than a month.

 

And after a period of restructuring, Megson believes his players will benefit from the new changes that have been implemented.

 

He said: "There has been a huge amount of work done behind the scenes. We have a scouting system now that is as good as anywhere.

 

"We now have three Europe-based scouts and then others based across the country. We have never had that sort of coverage and it has been a big bonus.

 

"We have seen a lot of staff come and go, but I am very pleased with the end result.

 

"Although ultimately it is what decides your fate, you are not down at the bottom of the table just because you are not scoring enough goals or conceding too many.

 

"It is what everyone sees - but there are a lot of other ifs, whys and wherefores that can affect what goes on at a football club.

 

"We felt that the whole place needed restructuring both in terms of personnel, facilities and the way we were looking to do things.

 

"I'm delighted with the backing we got from Eddie Davies and Phil Gartside, especially because you can't physically see anything for your money.

 

"It needed doing because now things are completely fresh. It is the same football club but there has been a huge amount of change.

 

"Everything we have done is to facilitate the players. You can have the best ground and best training facility but you are always judged by what your players do.

 

"What we are trying to do is give our players the best possible chance to get the results we want.

 

"Steve Wigley will be head coach and Alan Cork will be his assistant head coach. Adie Stovell has come in as a fitness coach and Nick Worth has joined us as head physio. The thing I am most pleased with is that the club needed no selling - everyone is really enthusiastic and champing at the bit to get back to work.

"We want the players exactly the same way. We want them to realise that this season is a fresh start. What people have done in the past or promised to do in the future doesn't matter anymore. It's about the here and now."

Must be a hell of a big pile of cash he's been given if he can't see anything because of it!

if he has now fully sorted out his backroom staff and the infrastructure then maybe he can now start focusing on improving the team with 2 or 3 quality purchases/loans

I wouldn't doubt it. We haven't hears anything on a new signing for a while now. He says he's still pursuing his 3rd target but with not a whisper than seems dead in the water. No signing in nearly 3 weeks (seems a long time doesn't it!) Hopefully something materialises soon

Big Sam wouldn't have signed anyone so far, we would be waiting for the 'best of the rest' in early August.

 

Give Megson some slack, signed some good players, if he uses them right we could be looking ok this year

Megson has spoken of 2 confirmed names - Elmander and Muamba, and signed them both. I'm happy for the work to go on behind the scenes and only talked about when the ink is drying, makes a nice change

This is true, however - the proof is that he has mentioned his difficulties in the backroom staff again. So yes - it's an interview

Now he has is own back-room staff, and most of the 1st team will be his signing he has to deliver or stand up to the flak

I feel that last year Megson was judged on taking someone elses team

 

This season its all his own, so he will sink or swim and as a result over the time he is in charge no doubt we will all do the same!

As mentioned last week a staff member is aware of all of the changes that is going on at the club and the that their are still coaching vacencies within the club

I was informed that in the opinion of long serving coach that infact the whole place needed restructuring is complete bollox as Bolton were at the forefront of all sports scence development and that is one of the biggest reasons why they have been succesful over the last few years.

 

Megson has taken away element of this to go a little more old school

 

We will see if this brings the same amount of success...

 

Two seasons ago the only team who didnt use pro zone and a full time sports scientist were Watford, they got relegated.

restructuring doesn't mean getting rid of prozone and/or everything else, it just bringing new things and new people in, combining them with what has worked before. It's clear that however Sammy Lee had it setup wasn't working, so it's been changed. Once again, if he hadn't changed anythin he'd be slagged off for that, the man cannot win.

 

I for one hope he succeeds, purely to ram it down the throat of the moaning Wanderers fans more than anything else.

I dont dislike Megson and hope he is a success but sometimes its useful for a fan (us all) to be aware that ALL managers butter things up for the media and supporters, and that people within can often give a more honest summary.

Pro Zone or any other aid would not have saved Watford from relegation. They could've had 12 men on the pitch and still gone down. They were Shite!

My point is, as we have covered a MILLION times....

 

It's not Megson's fault he was approached, it's not his fault he had to lose his best player from a squad that was slowly breaking apart and it's not his fault nobody liked him.

 

He kept the club up, made some excellent signings last season, has bought early this summer and is speaking positively about pre-season and the future.

 

And STILL people are constantly criticising him. Give the bloke a break and give him a fresh start with a full summer behind him.

Cant argue with any of his 5 signings in 2008.

 

His coaching staff don't exactly excite but their job is behind the scenes.

 

Megson has made great progress since taking over with just 5 points on the board and I for one, will give him full support.
