Athywhite_Mike Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Me and the Mrs are off to Rome on the 5th March for a long weekend. Anyone been before? Where are the best places to visit/avoid? What's the public transport like? There's also a game on while we are there between AS Roma and AC Milan. Wouldn't mind going. Any tips on where best to buy a ticket from? Particular stand to avoid sitting/standing in? Also, I believe its very expensive for drinks. Been told ?7 for a pint of lager in the centre! Many thanks!

Whisky Face Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Trastevere is a good area to go eat in. You can walk there from the historical centre in 10-15 mins i think, crossing a bridge somewhere. Watch the taxi drivers on way to and from airport.
Casino Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 aye, trastavere is on the west of the river, south of vatican allegedly the footballers hang out there i asked about the airport cos the main one whose name escapes me, has train straight in to termini (central station)

Though i think the location of your digs is vital to you having a good time. Used this lot a lot across Europe www.holiday-velvet.com You're basically staying in flats, villas, apartments slap bang in the middle of town. For the same money as a hotel a few miles out of town. We have used this site twice in Rome and about 6 times elsewhere. Looked at your hotel, looks ok but the distance from central Rome would put me off. Rome is all about walking around and soaking it up, especially in an evening.

Barnstoneworth White Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 First time I went about 6 years ago I managed to watch Roma against Udinese. No problem getting tickets from the ground half hour before the kick off, (maybe entirely different though for AC Milan). 23 Euro for a 'seat' in the corner to the right of the Roma Ultras. Twas a throwback to the 70s, a fantastic experience. They threw fireworks onto the running track and lit bonfires at the end of the match, (they lost 3-0). We managed to pre-book tickets on-line for the Colliseum, well recommended as the queues were massive. If the budget stretches get yourself a guide, he told some brilliant stories from what used to go on there - the one with the dwarves and crocodiles made me sick The other main queue was for the Vatican Museum (Sistine Chapel), may be worth checking to see if you can pre-order tickets on-line for that cos we couldn't at the time. Other highlights include the Pantheon and the view of the city from the top of St Peter's. I've recently watched Angels and Demons (I know) and that shows a lot of the sites as well.
LeggyMountbatten Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I've been to watch Roma as well. Would deffo recommend it - atmosphere was amazing. You can buy tickets in the Roma clubs shops - there's a few dotted around the city centre. Cheap as chips - think I paid about 12 euro but that was about 5 years ago now.
Athywhite_Mike Posted February 25, 2010 Author Posted February 25, 2010 Thanks all. I shall let you know how I get on with the Roma Ultras...
Athywhite_Mike Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 Stayed there, but never again. Was a filth hole. Loads of gangs hanging around the hotel and vicinity too. You must have been be on about a different Hotel. Its was spottless. Small but perfect for us as we hardly spent any time at the hotel apart from sleeping and breakfast. Loved the City, although very very busy. Didn't go to the game as we were under the impression the game was on the Sunday and not the Saturday. Bout time we realised the game was on the Saturday cheapest tickets we could get were for ?160 euro. Thought fook that, watched it on the box instead. Was a shit game anyhow. If you like you city breaks, I'd definitely recommend Rome although it can be a bit pricey. Cheapest pint I had was for ?4 and dearest was ?10.
