Has anyone ever used one or own one of these devices?

I'm thinking of purchasing one of the new models. Is it LED backlit for nighttime reading?

Any good?

Ta.

had a play with one in Waterstones, wasn't that impressed TBH.

It all seems to work well and is easy enough to read but i personally prefer the feel of a book.

I got a Sony reader about 18 months ago, and use it all the time.

Easy to get used to and loads of books to download if you look in the right places.

I use it a lot more than I ever thought I would.

Sony is not backlit so you do need a light to read it at night, but it is very clear.

I've had a Sony e-reader for over a year now, it's invaluable for taking on holiday & commuting. Loads of free books out there too. Electronic ink is very easy on the eye, not at all like reading a pc screen. It came with a case which makes it robust, it slips into a handbag quite easily too. The zoom function makes it easier for older people with failing eyesight to read.

I was put off the kindle by the fact that Amazon can take the books back, but the best thing to do is try out a few different readers (which, I think, means knowing someone with a Kindle).

Nearly forgot, you can borrow books from the library to put on the Sony, if you live in the right area

I've had a few, however you have to download them to MP3 players from a specific list (includes all ipod & creative). Unfortunately, my niece's cheapo mp3 player wasn't on the list so I had to keep lending her mine which was a pain, so I stopped doing it, and now record stuff from the radio to listen to later.

The father in law works all over the country and listens to em as he's driving.

He says it can be a bit hit and miss depending on who's reading it out.

There's an app on Iphone with access to thousands of free audiobooks.

After a certain period of time, books become public domain and are available for free access. Therefore the free audiobooks tend to be either old books and classics or modern shite that isn't commercially viable.

I've listened to a lot of decent stuff on there for free. Just finished Complete Works of HP Lovecraft which was great.

Agree with Frank's comment though, because the books are recorded by volunteers, they can sound quite amateurish, but occasionally you get a good reader.

Edgar Allan Poe doesn't sound quite right when it's being read by a Yank with a monotone voice! Still - not bad for free though!

Fuck that! I would end up skidding along the motorway on my roof after nodding off and hitting the central reservation! Need some good lively music to keep me alert on a long journey me.

Received my Kindle today. It's a smart little device. The eInk display needs to be seen to be believed how good it is!

One major gripe at the moment, apparantly Kindle does not support folders. Now the device can apparantly hold upto 3200 books. I have a few hundred technical ones for reference I would like to hold but sod that if theyre all on one list!

I have one on order that should be with me in a couple of weeks, let me know how you get on with yours, and what issues/problems I can expect to encounter

Well I can overcome the folders issue, the Kindle has what is known as 'Collections'. It's a bit long winded having to create them on the device as you have to go through an tick each one or manually add individual files. It would be far easier to be able to create a folder in the root directory and they appear as the collection if that what Amazon wishes to call it. Other than that it's great. Image is crystal clear, page turns are fast. Shame about the PDF format not being the best but its liveable. The only other gripe is the cost of Kindle Books on Amazon. It is cheaper to go to the bookshop for many of the titles available!

Can't you put them onto an external SD card? That's what I do with them on my Sony reader - piece of cake to find anything then.

There is no port for external memory units. Even if there was though, the Kindle doesn't recognise directories, so if I seperated my books into different folders, they all appear in the main list. It's not as big a problem as I originally made out though, what with the 'Collection's' function.

To be honest, I thought the prices were very good, I've checked out a few books I want and the costs are a lot less than if I bought them in a physical format.........plus of course the whole point is that I don't have to lug around physical books anymore

Suppose it really depends what your after. I've not found any books that I want that are cheaper than buying an hardcopy as yet. I'll be using mine to lug about work stuff, which there is a lot of, so it's serving its purpose already. :good:
