Aintree

Anyone got any tips for saturday? Making my annual visit to the national (so will miss the match too). Going to back Ballabriggs in the main race, and possibly up to two others but havent really had chance to look in depth this year.

Just incase anyone hasnt seen this offer on betfair.

Basically place a multiple on todays Aintree races and if one leg lets you down then you get half of your stake back. Ive gone for a treble of Big Bucks, Zarkandar, and Denman.

The missus is going to 'Ladies' day tomorrow so if anyone has any tips they will be much appreciated, it might just cover the cost of her new frigging handbag!

These are what I'd be looking at today:

2.00: Big Bucks won at 4/6, with a small E/W on Knockara Beau 5th (currently 40/1!)

2.30: Kumbeshwar 2nd at 11/1 (E/W): did well for me at Cheltenham at high odds and could yet improve.

3.05: Denman a poor 5th: easily the best horse and 11/8 seems good value. If Cheltenham has taken too much from him, then Carole's Legacy 2nd looks a decent saver bet at 6/1.

3.40: If their jumping holds up (which doesn't always!) then Baby Run won & Turko fell should fill the 1st two places between them. These concerns lead me to a small E/W punt on Ice Tea fell at at least 12/1.

4.15: I find it difficult to call between Tchico Polos 5th and Oiseau de Nuit 2nd, so I'll take both.

4.50: Another tight one between the top two in the market, and there's no value in backing both, so I'll plump for Medermit 2nd to make amends for a poor show in the Arkle. I picked the wrong one!

5.25: I fancy McCoy to end the day on a high on the top-weighted Get Me Out Of Here PU who looks good value at 10/1.

Fancied that myself but Jason Maguire was due to ride but been stood down today after a bad fall. He needs to ride this horse for me to back it.

Just seen his arm in a sling, hope he makes it

Denman didnt look great and never really looked like winning. Nacarat start to finish, good win for him

im there tomorrow traf any naps?

I'll do another run-through for tomorrow, but it might not get done until morning.

ok ta. will check me phone at aintree.

ps - bet ice tea but never looked likley before it fell

wayward prince 2.30 has to be backed tomoro.

Not a great Day 1, but no disaster.

Made money from race 1 (Big Bucks), race 2 (Kumbeshwar: again! Watch for him going to Punchestown), race 4 (Baby Run).

I broke even in race 5 with an E/W on Oiseau de Nuit and lost on the last two.

2.00: Sire de Grugy

2.35: Wayward Prince

I've not looked further yet.

3.05: Tranquil Sea E/W

3.40: Stick a pin in this one! Alfa Beat 16/1 E/W & Swing Bill 28/1 E/W

4.15: Mossley (small E/W on Our Island at 50/1!)

4.50: Souffleur 16/1 E/W

5.25: Baby Shine 8/1 E/W

Cheers traf!

traf, what happend to wayward prince, thowt it was a banker today. fancy cue card tomoro .

he didn't jump well at all and his performance summed my day up perfectly.

The big race looks wide open this year.

I like the look of Quinz: a 16/1 shot, but I don't think it has the experience needed, so one just to watch with a view to backing it next year. Pretty much the same could be said for Becauseicouldntsee at 25/1. If you back either of these, you should get a decent run for your money, but they might just fall short for stamina at the end.

Obviously the vast amounts of money will pile in for Don't Push It and The Midnight Club, but I think Backstage could very well beat them. Another interesting one is Skippers Brig who has only just scraped in at the bottom of the handicap: very lightly raced, but stays forever and is a good value E/W shot at 33/1, especially considering he's carrying 22lbs less than the fav. over a 4.5 mile slog.

State of Play has finished 4th and 3rd in the last two runnings and I've made a good few quid out of this one. He looks set to run a decent race once more and 28/1 is a decent price.

And finally: I always try to find a proper longshot to upset the applecart: just a very small fun bet. Mon Mome won this recently at 100/1, so you never know! This time I'm looking at Royal Rosa at 100/1. Not an obvious choice due to his inconsistency, but has been placed twice over this course in the Bechers Chase.

So, at the risk of looking like I'm backing all 40 runners: I hoping to make a profit from:

Backstage (14/1)

State of Play (28/1)

Skippers Brig (33/1)

Royal Rosa (100/1)

All E/W of course! And those of you backing E/W tomorrow: check Victor Chandler's prices and use them if they're as good as elsewhere, as they're paying E/W on the first 6 home!
