Someone on here had a phone row with Phil Neal about Ian Stevens.

  • Might as well have been for the sense that Neal talked.

  • Neal could find a cure for male pattern baldness and beer guts but would still be castigated by some.   He turned the direction of travel around and left the club in a better situation than he took

Yep!!!

He inherited an absolute clusterfuck of a football club that was at absolute rock bottom

I remember getting his autobiography, Life at the Kop, for Christmas.

He said when he arrived we’d reached rock bottom and couldn’t get any lower.

He proved himself wrong fairly quickly.

Remember listening to some radio interview a few years back with a journeyman who'd seemed to have played with every team bar us. When asked who the worst manager he had was he immediately replied Neal. But then tempered that by saying he was one of the best coaches he worked under.

Chimes with a memory I have of chatting to people in the boozer after Reading away in the latter part of his time here, and we all agreed he was starting to put a bit of quality together - but just didn't seem to know how to get the best out of them. That, of course, was Rioch's strength...

Story that after Southampton in the cup he sat in his car on the burnden car park for four hours

Think he then had a week off during which we won away by a few

Can see why the job gets on top of folk

It's hard to go anywhere when your tyres have been nicked.

He needed Mick Brown to sort things out but he was absent after getting his arm stuck in his mower.

Gardening leave, if you will.

Still goes to matches. Nice bloke the few times I have met him. Tells some good stories too

Nice lad, indeed.

Used to know him and his dad years back, when Lee was just starting out, but anyone who thought he'd be the next big thing didn't know him.
