January 8, 20188 yr Author interesting to note brentford scrapped their academy more i think about it, the more it doesnt seem a bad idea especially in london/manc where there must be a massive dumping of decent talent in the mid/late teens stage

I know they are caught in the 60 min radius of a hell of a lot of clubs, though I understood this was more about losing talent to the 'bigger' clubs. I have ordered the book, I understand it is something I should read. I am nervous about how things will; my lad is at Burnley after having been at Wigan, and played for Man City... he is 8. He was offered a pre-contract at the end of last season, as they are concerned that other clubs are coming in for him- closer, with better facilities, and better offers (private education etc). For us it is immaterial- he is at Burnley because he loves it there. His enjoyment is the only thing that matters- statistically he is unlikely to make it, so learn what you can and enjoy yourself on the way. He has said he would only consider leaving for Bolton or Barca.
January 8, 20188 yr Many of the actual scouts are now being taken by bigger richer clubs, example scouts from Bolton/Wigan/Bury are moving to City/United/Everton. Which means those kids that may go to the smaller clubs, end up in Development squads at the bigger clubs. Depending on your opinion....the bigger club is probably better.

Its better for the top 0.1%. The rest who are good but take longer to mature or develop, or are good but physically not as strong end up wasting away and ruining their careers. The problem is that players aren't getting enough experience of real football, so apart from the tiny proportion who break through the rest get to 18/19 and haven't had the chance to mature their games and learn what real football is about. Some of those lads might in time become better than the 0.1% who shine early on. But we'll never know because their development hasn't allowed them the real experience needed. This is a small part of the reason why the national team is so poor. The best players are sitting at a few top clubs but only a few ever break through. By the time the others get out, their development is too late to allow them to really flourish.

You either get in the 'Elite' with a contract or they let you go. At the richer clubs, they have other levels after that, offering development while kids still play for grass roots and schools teams. Bolton / Bury take 15 kids on contract......take the odd kid on trial now and again but thats it. City / Everton / United take 50 plus kids over different levels and give them coaching and dev, for long periods. The funny thing is, its only the England first team that struggles. If your kid is one of the elite lads, then they are better off at a smaller club getting game time. If they just fall short of game time some reason or another, then bigger clubs Development squads are better. Game time is key and they have to enjoy it. Thats why these better dev squads can be a good option, as they dont stop kids playing for grass roots or schools. All depends on each individual kid, but money has a massive part to play. Bolton and the likes just can't compete with the surrounding clubs that offer better systems. Some of these private academys now offer better coaching than many pro clubs. Shadow squad systems are great- as you say, still eligible for grass roots, but get the better coaching... kids still have hope, ideally will develop into better people for the experience.

One of the saddest parts for me, and there were lots, was when one of the interviewees said many young kids are kept on with the clubs in full knowledge they wont make it, but are used to in effect make the numbers up and give the better ones someone to play against.

Loads do this now, and with the 3g available more games get played. Lads / Parents are turning down lower acads for these private firms.....coaching is just as good if not better, and the kids still play for grass roots & school. I like that blend. My lad is almost 13 and has been all over, trials and had loads of great coaching, and is a better player for it and has enjoyed it. Yes he has been upset, but we have to manage this in the right way. Kids will have rejection at school, you deal with it and try to use to make them stronger as a person.

I would say, that if they know full well they wont make it, then they are not being used.

Thats the sad reality of it I suppose. At 1 club I was told that my lad was used to push the sronger lads from the year below. My choice then to leave or stay.

January 8, 20188 yr Ah. Thats the sad reality of it I suppose. At 1 club I was told that my lad was used to push the sronger lads from the year below. My choice then to leave or stay. If full disclosure about what the plans for the future or non future of the player is given then fair enough especially if they still get something positive out of it for staying on, at the very least staying physically fit and occupied. I don’t like the idea of clubs hoarding kids as footballing drones though that came across in the program

January 8, 20188 yr My mates lad was at Bolton and was a really good player from the age of 10, at 12 Liverpool came in for him and promised him the world, 2 years on and he doesn't play anymore, his dad says they 'trained' him out of enjoying it, plus the scouse kids were resentful of him as he had taken a place off one of their mates
