Builders in Manchester found the ear on a pavement outside the city's prison in the Strangeways area last week. Police checked with hospitals but said no-one had been admitted without an ear and no-one had tried to claim it. Forensic tests revealed on Tuesday that it belonged to a pig. A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said they had no idea how it got there. She said: "We initially thought it was a human ear. The tests showed that it was a pig's ear. "It was better to be safe than sorry."
