Port Vale Away (mid Eighties)

Apologies if this one has been posted before.

Anyone remember one of their fans being stabbed in the leg (nearly bled to death apparently) before the match.

After the match we had to have our photo took and be lined up in front of one of his mates, who was a witness, before we could get out of the ground.

went to the game and from what i remember the port vale lad who got stabbed was part of a mob who wanted it and decided to pick on some wanderers fans in a pub. the PV lads came off 2nd best. took us over an hour to get out of the ground because of the id parade, don't think they never did get the lad who did it. if you mess with the big boys you'll get hurt and back in them days PV and bolton where at it regular. can't remember them having a go at us again after that.

another thing i remember about that day is that the chips we had where the worst i've ever had. english mustard colour and as soft as jelly.

It was before the 1-1 draw in 86/87.

The Travel Club coaches were slightly delayed after the match with the OB walking down the aisles looking for likely suspects.

Fcking mad day.

I was in the pub that got attacked.

We managed to get out and 50 yards away where PV mob, these were all in there 20's, 30's, we where in our late teens early 20's.

I thought we where going to get battered here.

Any how we charged them and they ran, remember there main lad, had Vale tatt on neck, getting a shoeing.

OB turn up and asked who we are, someone says PV so he send us down the road back to PV mob where it kicked off again.

Me and another poster off here, where at the front of the escot that took us past the guy and onto the ground.

One OB was holding his face togther. Awful sight,.

Remember fending off all comers as we where marched to the ground.

In the ground OB where walking up to lads with black leather jackets on as witnesses used binocs to id the culprit.

There where 30 on the coach down, fcking full going back.

I think 3 got lifted for it but released through lack of evidence, I've no idea who did it.

There's been rumours PV have paid visits to those they think did it, don't know how true they are.

Seen blades flashed at Tranmere, PV & Darlo, I nearly got one in me at Wrexham in 88.

Mad bad days the 80s.

Think my brother-in-law told me about this game. Did it go off in the stands too? He went to Vale once and got bit by a police dog which had to be kicked off his leg. The scars have been left

Always gone off with them fcukers. It may have been towards the end of the Armfield promotion season in 72-73. Remember John Byrom scoring 2 in a 2-1 win (I think - may have ended up 2-2). It was on all day in the pubs and on the terraces. Sky blacked out with bricks and bottles at one stage of the game.

The game in the Armfield promotion season was 2-2. We came back from 2-0 down. I remember one of the Port Vale ball boys getting a bollocking from the ref for time wasting.

That's the one. We were in a corner just to the right of their end. Missiles flying all game. Their top lad was a very large West Indian gentleman. Couple of dozen of our lads got in here undetected and it all kicked off. The big lad was the first one downed. OB rounded up the invaders and just turfed em into our corner to a standing ovation. Sure it was JB who scored both ours and the second one was a screamer.

didnt the ball boy also get a clip round the ear from a bolton fan??

April 1973 Port Vale 2 - Bolton 2

The ball boy (who was about 17, and had a trendy "feather cut") got a good slapabout at the final whistle, he'd been trying to waste time whenever he had the ball as we tried to made our comeback, and was winding up the Bolton fans. If i remember rightly our fans had all one side of the ground ( on the ball boys side, second half),and had also infiltrated their end - back in those days you could walk all the way around the ground, so those who wanted to have "fun" could easily have a get together. It usually took the OB about 20 mins to realise there was a problem :good:

At the final whistle, a few "over excited" whites fans jumped over the barrier - and dealt a short sharp shock to the timewasting ballboy. Happy days

Can recall a lad called Salford P, doing himself justice that day on the PV paddock, must admit, those Vale fans were a game set of lads in the eighties.

Fcking mad day.

But can you name that pub?

Dont Quote me F/W, but was it called " The Vines"?

port vale came looking for revenge that time because the year before a couple of them accidentally strayed into the manny road terrace receiving a good kicking.if i remember rightly they were trapped in the corner near the embankment and climbed onto the railings and some of ours climbed up and dragged them down into the baying hordes below.

the fool with pvfc tattoo on his neck was actually one of them thus creating a chain of events lasting a couple of seasons and ending in that stabbing in 87.

i thought that lad was dying, there was so much claret pouring out of him, definitely the worst sight ive ever seen at a football match except for pedersen's miss against chelsea when one-on-one with the keeper and he missed by about 20 yards and the ref gave a corner !

going back to the thread,a year later when we played port vale away again,we took 6 transit vans crammed packed with lads down early doors.

unfortunately we were met on the A50 by the old bill and escorted to the ground were we reamained until kick off frustrated and bloody thirsty.

our luton box van with something like 40 lads in the back had a police horse right at the back of the shutters blocking everyones exit, that is until some bright spark mamaged to unhook the shutters and they collapsed sending lads spliing onto the car park and the police horse did a runner !

some lads from the prince rupert actually made it into a one of their boozers only for the doors to be locked once inside and they had to make a very hasty retreat through the back door.

inside the ground does anyone remember the lad who was stabbed on our previous visit making a futile effort to get into our end at the bottom left hand corner. he was promptly arrested and escorted past us lot. the clearly visible scar on his face running from his ear along his face and down past his throat was gruesome.

i recall a certain well known daubhillite shouting at him "you'll get a proper job done next time pal"

80's football was truly frightening but a superb crack with lasting memories.
