no balls Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I do feel for all the folk holed up in that hotel but felt I needed to redress the balance if only in a small way as to my experience in Belgrade. On arrival through customs a helpful taxi driver, with aspirations of being a rally driver, took us to our hotel. The hotel was warm, clean and the staff helpful. I had a mission to find Jumbo to pick a package up from him. I lost all bearings & must've asked half a dozen folk where Republic Square was, every single one of them was more than helpful. Before the match, the police came in the pub to tell us we must leave, we explained we had a mini bus booked at 7.30 and he said, fair enough and let us stay in the pub till then. On our return back to the centre, the police were again, polite and courteous. After a long day, we told the police we were a wee bit hungry and so we'll be off for the night, they said, 'take care' and off we went. Not speaking a word of Serbian, the take away assistant suggested a top sweet delicacy for my travelling partner. And a belting feed was had by all. Our flight from Belgrade to Zurich was delayed by over an hour and so this meant we would miss our connection. The gentleman at Jat arranged for us to have a car waiting on the runway at Zurich & taken to the next available flight. Top bloke! I need to apologise for all my previous 'barbarian' comments. Every person we met was top notch!

The first 2 people we asked for directions to Republic square sent us in completely the wrong direction (Both were women). Stopped a bloke who was a Red Star fan, he walked us to the square (top bloke, had a good chat, his gf was seriously pi$$ed off as it was 5 minutes out of their way). Turns out Republic square was round the corner from where wes started, and the bitches had sent us on a 20 minute wasted trip. My overall impression of Serbia and its people was not a favourable one.

soulman Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 " The first 2 people we asked for directions to Republic square sent us in completely the wrong direction (Both were women)" cant believe you asked women for directions. my mrs gets lost goin' from bedroom to bog ! all the people we met were friendly and helpfull. especially the taxi driver who took us to the airport charged us 800 denar, drove like a stunt man. ie. single lane sliproad onto motorway at a standstill, big kerb, driver spots a chance to create a 2nd lane. 2 wheels up onto the kerb at angle of 45 degrees squeezes all the way up on outside, BANG ! 2 wheels drop back onto road in between 2 other stunned drivers and were off. "can i open my eyes now" !!!
soulman Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 nice to see you in belgrade big fella. are you still trying to get these red star delije onside ?
Carlos Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I had a great trip from start to finish, Dragan, Daniel and the rest of our drivers were top notch. The bloke in the hotel was sound, even when he was pissed off at losing. The coppers were very fair most of the time. The blokes in the sports bar, I hope they made lots of money despite certain items disappearance. The bloke in McD's looking dismayed as we chucked away full meals whilst most people were sipping coffees as slowly as possible. The people in the kebab shop with their cheap cans of ale. The taxi driver who charged about ?7 for the trip to the airport. The lovely lady in the RSB shop. To me, it felt safer than Manchester when I was walking round last night amongst the pissed up office workers and gig going scallies.

no balls Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 How we got to the airport in one piece i'll never know but fair play to the bloke! I wonder if the 5:00 airport bus ever did turn up? Stupidly I kept my eyes open in the taxi going back. 80 odd kph in the city centre then hard shoulder and 2 wheels all the way from out of town to the airport. All for 1000 dinars!
scowie58 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Me and a few others had a lovely experience with a taxi driver at around 2.00 a.m. after the game, loved a bit of punch with his coke apparently.

Rembrandt Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I'm sure most (if not all) of the folk in Belgrade would have been friendly if only the police chief or whoever had let us meet them instead of kidnapping us for the afternoon.
