Hello there.

Havent been on here for a while.

Hope everyone is well?

You will be pleased to hear I have now grown up and am not a silly little boy.

But I still expect the piss-taking so... :pardon:

 

Anyway. I saw this question on another forum. See if any of you lot can do it :)

 

So, you are on a train. The train is travelling north at a velocity of 50mph.

 

You are in the first class carriage, in which there is an escalator moving in the opposite direction (south) moving at a velocityof 6mph. The escalator is angled at 45 degrees.

 

You, being the messer that you are, are running in the opposite direction on the escalator at a velocity of 8mph.

 

So, what direction are you moving, in relation to the ground, and at what velocity taking all factors into account?

Work it out for yourself, using this as a clue.

If you're on a train travelling 100mph and you jump up in the air, why do you still land on the same spot?

Oh I know the answer already. Its relatively simple.

But im still trying to work out why you would land on the same spot... I cant see how that is possible?

Because you are travelling at a 100mph as well.

 

Think of it like this - when you get in your car you put your seat belt on. If you have a crash, the seat belt saves you from flying through the windscreen - that is because when you crash your car it decelerates in an instant from the speed you were travelling (say 60mph) to zero. If you did not have your belt on and the car crashed then although it had stopped dead - you have not and so you would fly forward still travelling at 60mph into the windscreen!

 

So if you jumped up on the train - the train is moving at 100mph - you are moving at 100mph - and hence you will land on the same spot you took off from.

Because you are travelling at a 100mph as well.

Because your image is not 'swapped over' merely reflected - thus nothing as changed just that the 'reflection' portrays to yourself how everyone else actually sees you!

Because I don't believe that to be true. There may well be a similarity in the size of both but in many cases they will not be identical.

Yes, you are spot on Rich - I was really only trying to show that the speed of the train in which you were travelling was the most significant part of the question.

 

If anyone really wants to know how the 1.414mph is derived -

 

It is because you are travelling in a north direction at 2mph (8mph - 6mp) at a 45 degree angle.

 

Because you are travelling in a 45 degree angle you are not travelling 2mph in a horizontal way but sort of like travelling into the ground - so how then do you work out how far you would have travelled along the ground (rather than 'into' the ground - if you understand what I mean.

 

The answer is by Pythagoras theorem - being 'The square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides'.

 

In this case the hypotenuse is the 2 miles you would have travelled in the hour.

 

Because the hypotenuse is stated to be 45 degrees it is easy to construct a right handed triangle (a 90 degree triangle with both the other two internal angles being 45 degree's each - total internal degrees of a triangle adding up to 180 degrees).

 

A you know the hypotenuse is 2 miles long then the area of its square would be 4 square miles (2 miles x 2 miles).

 

Thus the squares on the other two sides must (when added together) total 4 square miles.

 

Therefore you must have two squares each with sides of 1.414 miles - (1.414 x 1.414 = 1.999 miles which is rounded up to two square miles. - 2 square miles plus another 2 square miles = 4 square miles - the same as the square on the hypotenuse.

 

Therefore the person would be travelling 1.414 miles if he was travelling along the horizon plus the 50 miles per hour he is travelling on the train - thus the right answer is indeed 51.414mph in a north direction.

The missing quid was never there in the first place!

 

This is one of those questions that you have to concentrate on the 'direction' of the question - as it reads ok in one way - and it reads ok the other way - but the two ways seem to not agree when put side by side!

 

Let me give you an example - we all know that (counting thumbs as fingers) that we have 5 fingers on each hand and ten in total.

 

Ok to prove this just hold your hands up - and count them out aloud 1,2,3.4,5 on your right hand - then continue 6,7,8,9 and 10 on your left hand - all there good! BUT now count backwards - 10,9,8,7,6 on your left hand - PLUS the 5 you have still to count on your right hand - just a minute 6 plus 5 = 11 fingers - that can't be right can it!

 

Similarly with the three men and the porter.

 

Concentrate on what it cost the men in total - ?25 for the room and ?2 tip = ?27

They gave the porter ?30 and got ?3 change =?27 the same cost - ok

 

Therefore the 'missing' pound is just like the 'eleventh finger' - it never existed - it was simply the way that the question was asked!

Aye thats it sluffy but I worked it out using cos(theta) = Adjacent/Hypotenuse.

And then coming out with 1.41421356.

Both ways are just as good.
