Whilst that is a lot of money in most peoples world... In the world of buying Premiership footballers it is likely to get you someone who is no better than what we have got already.

Unless we are prepared to buy REAL Premiership talent we are really not gonna make much progress.

In the recent past we have spent more than double that on average players.

So far we have bid for Morrison. I was not really inspired by that. I'd be happier knowing we were chasing a 'Richardson' for big bucks!

Richardson is no better than Morrison. Not at all.

Theres no indication that we aren't in for Richardson either. Megson was pretty cagey about it when asked.

Which Richardson are you talking about? Please, not Kieran?

Richardson is no better than Morrison. Not at all.

That's an opinion. My point is that spending 2 or 3 million on one player will probably get us what we already have in midfield... Ordinary!

The reason I disagree with your assessment above is I feel it would likely cost us closer to 10 million to buy Richardson! That's what real class costs in todays market in MY opinion. That was my point like!

This is why I said I'd be happier knowing we were. So far we KNOW we have bid for Morrison and this thread is about bidding 2 million for Kingston. I confess I know next to nothing about him but once again... my point is 2-3 million is not what we should be spending on a player if we are serious about improving

Which Richardson are you talking about? Please, not Kieran?

Yes Kieran.

We could have a really long discussion about why I think he's class and why you think he's rubbish.... BUT my point is lets be after players that at least SOMEBODY thinks is worth 8-10 million!

I do and I know others who do.

The man would still be at Man U but for Roy Keane and regular first team football. He's far far far far far better than what we have in our current midfield.

SOMEBODY thinks is worth 8-10 million!

"somebody" thought Jo was worth ?20m.....

Really, does it need pointing out that Amount of Money Spent = Talent of Player isn't the case at all?

This is why Sunderland and Spurs aren't fighting it out for CL spots. Because they bought shit like Richardson at overinflated prices and big wages.

If we offered anything like ?10mil for him Sbragia would be laughing his tits off all the way to the bank. ?5mil would probably be too much.

Bolton fans seem to have adopted this idea that if you can do a stepover or score a great goal every 15 games, it makes you a worldbeater. I also don't understand why it's a bad thing that Megson isn't ringing up the press every five minutes to tell them we're after Edgar Davids. As always under Megson, deals will be done quickly and quietly.

Yes Kieran.

I do and I know others who do.

Then please give a better example. I'm not saying he's rubbish BUT paying bloody good money for folk like that does not inspire me, it fills me with dread as to the stupidity of the game.

Do we have a player that can do a step over? ::lol::

Thank you for at least understanding what I mean't :) ... others are struggling ;)

I did say chasing a 'Richardson' ... I couldn't think of a better example ... but the quotes were so you could insert your own.

And for everyone else... one more time before I shoot myself ;)

Did I mention my point was I think we should put all our money together and pay it on a player who some at least would think worth it.

Spending 2-3 million on a player is a waste unless you have got time to buy a player without experience and wait for him to come good.

Totally agree with Arnold Jackson, we should be chasing players who can change or win games, not going for a few extra bodies to offer a bit of competition.

Saying that, with Nicky Hunt back, the sky's the limit. I'm already saving up for Europe. I even went down the bookies today to put on a few quid for a Champions League spot. Come to think of it, why bother buying anyone? With him and Shittu in the team, we're untouchable. If only we could tempt Barry Cowdrill and Julian Darby out of retirement, we'd be up for the title.

saw nicky hunt attempt one when he was playing for brum t'other week.

fair to say it didn't work

Supa John used to get his leg over.

I know what you're saying, but i don't agree.

I want us to sign good players, how much they cost or how much others think they are worth is totally irrelevant. Kevin Davies immediately springs to mind, Southampton couldn't wait to get rid, and then he rocked up here and was a major part in two European runs.

There are plenty of players who may be unwanted or undervalued at clubs, but could do a job here. Similarly, spending massive amounts of money is no guarantee of buying quality. Spurs spent ?17mil on Bentley and he's done fcuk all (and many pundits would've said he was worth it last season) we bought an unwanted Matt Taylor for ?3mil and he's been excellent.

It's all about how they'll work in our team.

Supa John used to get his leg over.

wonder if he got his leg over more often than Sasa?

We actually paid ?5.2m for Taylor.

All up front? I stand correct. I was annoyed at the time when i thought it wer ?3mil, if i'd have known that i'd have collapsed. He's proved me wrong though.

Nevertheless, it was less than Bentley, and less than Richardson. And he's been better value than them both.

nonce!

held back on the other post but you are talking rubbish!

Might be worth looking up the word 'sarcasm'.

Hunt and Shittu easy targets!

FWIW Shittu isnt as bad as is made out on the board.

He's no Bobby Moore either though, is he?

Or indeed, Premiership class, at least not for a team wanting to go places.

No that's not right - it is a big part of the equation I agree but you have forgotten the two key parts and that is how the player fits in to the team / system, and man management skills

Take for instance both the teams you mentioned - once Keane and Ramos were replaced - there was an immediate improvement with the same players under a new manager.

A lot of people would say that that is down to players trying to impress the new manager - but in reality it is the new manager making minor positional changes that allow him to get more from certain players. For instance Luka Modric is a great player but is too slight to play his favoured role in the Premiership - Redknapp as begun to play him deeper and suddenly his game as come back.

Our own Elmander for instance apparently plays outstandingly as the second striker, playing a slightly withdrawn role from a targetman - but Sweden in the World Cup used him as right sided midfield and Bolton as targetman - we therefore have an excellent signing who is not playing in his best suited position - because of the managers wishes.

Davies was not played as a battering-ram type of striker under Strachan and stank - Allaryce used him in his must suited role and the rest is history.

Another element of the mix is man management skills. I must admit that I liked the no nonsense style of management such as under Rioch but it simply is not suitable in this day of football squads made up from multimillionaires - as Keane as just found out.

The great managers are the ones who know what pieces he needs for his jigsaw irrespective of price.

I agree with this 100%.

I admired Rioch, he is very moralistic, he was the gaffa, the players new it and give him lots of respect. He had a great style and it worked well in his time. This day and age the millionaire egotistical players in general have a bad attitude towards their managers. They see themselves as the bosses. Rioch was an ex-military man with a dictatorial (in the nicest sense of the word) personality. I remember once going to a supporters club meeting (yes I have been a werthers & tartan rug waller for a long time) where he was the guest speaker. He came across as someone with good old fashioned values. He spoke briefly about Jason McAteer saying that he would like him to be a married man because his single life was holding him back in his life/career, he needed stability. Even back then, these views seemed a bit extreme, in this day and age it seems very dated.

On the other hand Roy Keane seems like a personality that is dictatorial in the worst possible way, and at the wrong time in history. You can't bully people into respecting you. I hate that bloke/player/manager
