April 10, 200917 yr Turing was the mathematician behind the code breaking at Bleachley Park during WWII, the Enigma machine and all that. He worked on Manchester Mark I at the uni, one of the earliest and most famous computers. Turing machines are still used in hypothetical problem solving. One of the greatest people this country has every produced.

April 10, 200917 yr Something to do with an apple but can't remember any more Did you know that is why Apple computers was so named, and the symbol, an apple with a bite out of it is a tribute to Alan Turing. I didn't know that until recently. He killed himself by biting into a poisoned apple. As Casino said, one of the greatest minds this country ever produced, saved millions of lives, without him the war could have dragged on until Hitler had perfected his rockets. He invented the modern computer and how did the establishment of this country thank him? They hounded him to death because of his sexuality. The story of Enigma, Bletchley Park and Alan Turing is absolutely fascinating.Talk about unsung heroes.
April 10, 200917 yr One of his fellow brillant mathematicians, Jack Good, passed away this week. Aged 92. "He was unmarried" Edited April 10, 200917 yr by boltondiver
April 10, 200917 yr Did you know that is why Apple computers was so named, and the symbol, an apple with a bite out of it is a tribute to Alan Turing. I didn't know that until recently. Urban myth I'm afraid. A bloke called Rob Janoff created it. ....the stripes were included in line with design trends at the time, and the bite was included so that people didn't mistake the apple for a tomato or some other fruit. An interview in which he explains this is posted on his web site. His radio interview is here - http://robjanoff.com/interview.mp3 and is taken from his own web site - http://robjanoff.com/ As for Alan Turing - completely agree with your assessment of him.
