I'm only getting 23-25 to the gallon. I thought this cant be correct. I've looked at the internet and folk say it is about right. It can't be surely?

 

Before now I have never had a 'big car' so I know there will be some sort of difference and at the moment I'm only doing short runs in traffic which again wont help but 23mpg?????

 

Its a Passat 1.8 20V, which is the same engine as the Audi A4 if anyone has one of those.

You've got a smallish turbo engine pushing a biggish car in urban traffic. Mid 20's isn't unreasonable. Things like poor tyre condition or pressure, having the air con/heater/12 speaker Cd, elecrtic windows used a lot can also cost a couple of mpg. Doris has a 2.0l S60, similar size and driving, and gets exactly the same.

 

The later Audis have the FSI engines in which do about 15mpg more.

 

Correct. I have the 2.0T FSI engined Audi which, if i drive it properly, achieves about 36-38 mpg overall. Not bad for a petrol. If I drive it like a bastard though I get about 20.

I am averaging about 34mpg in a 2.0l petrol with about 206bhp. Granted I do a 450 mile round trip to northwest london and back each week but that will do for me!

Like I said, thats on a run to London and back on the motorways doing around 80-85 when possible.
