I have just finished university (decent degree in law, before the media studies lark starts!). I am looking to travel Australia from October till March and get a casual job over there. Also I am a big cricket fan so hope to catch us lot giving the Aussies a bit of grief. What I want to know is,

 

Where are the best places to go?

Where not to go!?

Easiest places to get casual jobs? (fruit picking etc)

Easiest method of travel, when I get there? etc

I had a mate who went for a year and he said the fruit picking was very hard work for not much reward, met some good people there but could only keep it up for a few weeks. He ended up in Camberra working in McDonalds: said it was well easy, working with fellow travellers, got to visit different places every few weeks, saved plentty of cash and smoked a shit load of pot (don't know if you're in to that but it just shows how easy the job was if he was constantly high).

Reet then Surrey, now the plantpots, weirdos and homos have had their say, the voice of reason is here.

 

Firstly, you may want to avail yourself of the advice of Kent White. I'm still getting speeding tickets for the fcuker but, apart from that, he has had the experience of things you mention whereas I was brought here with specific skills to supports a specific industry so haven't fooked about with fruit picking and the like.

 

I can tell you, however, that prawn trawlers and fruit picking work is readily available in Carnarvon WA. Hot and sunny place. Loads of gins who will pipe you off for a middy of the amber nectar. Not my cup of tea but seems to appeal to some.

If you're travelling Oct to March you'd be best to stay down South. It'll be rainy season up North (and it's proper rain - not like ours over here).

 

6 months isn't a lot of time to explore Oz and it depends how long you want to spend working as to how much travelling you'll get in. Also - are you more interested in visiting the cities or getting into the outback?

 

Fruitpicking is hard work and pretty poorly paid. But, if you're desperate and work hard, long hours, you can save up quite a lot of cash doing it, mainly because you'll be working in the middle of nowhere and won't be able to spend your cash on anything other than beef jerky and VB. If you've only got 4 months - I'd consider sacking the fruitpicking off and just trying to save a bit harder before you go. Honestly mate, it's gubbins!

 

Jobs in the City are easy to come by - as long as you have a working visa (but don't tell them you're only staying 6 months. If you're not getting one - you're probably stuck with labouring or bar work and it's not as easy to find.

 

If you want cities and beaches, I'd fly to Melbourne and head for St Kilda as they'll just be getting into early summer in Oct. Find a job for a couple of months till after Christmas. You can do the Great Ocean Rd, Phillip Island and other stuff from there too. After New Year, I'd head North via Sydney, Brisbane and all the quality places in between - you can't really go wrong travelling up either coast as there's usually only 1 road.

 

If you want outback and beautiful scenery, then the West Coat pisses all over the East from a great hight IMO. Fly to Perth (Bolty's neck of the woods) spend a couple of weeks South of Perth and then head North. Some unbelievable places, but the distances you'll be covering are immense. You're talking a good 8 hour drive a day to get between towns. You'll get most of your rural jobs fruitpicking and farming round these parts. Also as I think Bolty mentioned, the Oyster Boats go out from the ports that time of year. They ARE good money but hard work! Go up as far as Exmouth and make sure you get to Ningaloo Reef which is better than the Great Barrier Reef and only about 4 metres offshore instead of 60 odd miles.

 

I could go on all night mate. Wherever you go you'll have a good laugh. Just be aware that however big you imagine Australia is, multiply it by 6 - it's fucking ridiculous. You can fit Western Europe into WA! So try to factor that into your plans if you've limited time.

 

My best bit of advice would be to get a years working visa - do 3 months fruitpicking so that you can extend it to 2 years and stay over their as long as you can!

He had to follow a tractor on his hands and knees throwing cucumbers into a vat while some fat Australian farmer drove the tractor, eating a meat pie and telling him he was a lazy cnut. Now then, as suggested, Kent White offers some very good advice and spot on observations. If you see nothing else, see Ningaloo. I have just had two couples arrive back in Perth who have had 10 days up there at my suggestion. Blown away would be an understatement. Been swimming with Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, Tiger Sharks, out on quad bike tours; reef exploring etc. Exmouth has become the place to be since the US Naval Base closed down.
