Oh you JCL. It was originally West Hartlepool or as the natives have it British West Hartlepool. I've been to Hartlepools more times than most have had hot dinners. It's not much different to other dock towns. I went to the football there in the 70s and had a drink in the town and experioenced no trouble whatsoever. Some people must just attract trouble or go looking for it.

Having done a bit of research (When Saturday Comes article on t'internet), it appears they became Hartlepools Utd as it was West Hartlepool and Hartlepool joining together.

 

This was 1908; glad you could remember it Biff

 

This changed in '68 when they became Hartlepool AFC and then in '77 back to United but with the singular Hartlepool.

 

I'm glad I looked as I never knew

Regarding the football team, they were originally named West Hartlepool United and became Hartlepools following unification later dropping the s. West Hartlepool lives on in the name of the rugby club.
