I thought the same. Every couple of years at work we get sent out on "Defensive Driving" courses with ex-coppers who 'teach' us how to stay safe and to avoid accidents by knowing what to look out for and how to make others more aware of us on the roads, blah, blah, blah.

 

Anyway, a big part of it is to make sure we have our fucking foot on the brake as much as possible (therefore pissing the bloke off in the car behind, but at least if he's pissed off then he knows we're there, blah, blah, blah).

 

I'd have though it was pretty much common sense, the more you brake, the less fuel efficient you're being.

Did one a while ago- the fuel efficient driving does work, already saving dosh. Wife has improved more though- not having my head driven into the head rest then the windscreen any more

My versiion of fuel efficient driving is to coast down hills as aften as road conditions alow. You won't see that in a SAFED driving course though as it is bloody dangerous.

The Government are trying to convince us that it doesn't work though? I think it's with the car tax paperwork. So does it or doesn't it?

It's perfectly fine and safe as long as you lift both feet away from the pedals, put your arms in the air and shout "Weeeeeee".

coasting is bad, no control.

 

rolling is fine, engine braking in use and using feck all fuel. you should do this as much as possible.

 

basically if the light ahead is on red, doesnt matter fast you get there, there is a finite amount of time before that light turns green, so take your time getting there and reduce the need to stop, and subsequently the need to use more fuel getting going again.

Yep, that's a big thing they were trying to drum into us. Never come to a complete stop as you'll use much less fuel getting back up to speed if you've not come to a complete standstill. If needs be, just hold it slightly above biting point just so long as you're still moving. They didn't seem too arsed about your clutch though I must admit.

The Govt are wrong. They reckon coasting uses just as much fuel. I reckon it can't possibly do because your engine is idling, not revving. As has also been pointed out, by both me and Homer, you have no control over your car if you have no power to the wheels.
