Energy tariff coming to an end. Estimated costs for next year. £2400

What the fuck??

So what's the crack with this green deal. Anyone looked at it?

Making my house more energy efficient will obviously reduce bills but is green deal the way to go or do I just bite the bullet and spend a couple of grand on a decent boiler?

I went to a CPD Event on it afew months back. It was boring as fuck and I learnt very little from it. The only thing I do recall was. If you wanted PV's on your roof they would calculate how much it would cost and how much you would save from it. And for it to be cost effective the saving you make by having them had to be enough for you to cover your grant repayments and save you money on your energy bill at the same time. I can't remember the exact figures.

Also there's very few companies that have the right accreditation so far to do this green deal thing. I can get you the details of the company that did the cpd if you wanted advice. Despite being boring fuck they seemed to know their stuff.

I nearly went for the PV's on my roof but because of my lack of employment decided to invest in a business instead. However the government halved the tariff paid and although the cost of the PV's have come down its nowhere near as good a investment as it was. I did learn however in my research that some PV's are much better than others. Unsurprisingly the German and Japanese ones were the best.

A modern condensing boiler and individual motorised room radiator valves controlled by wireless room stats positioned where we spend most time in the rooms cut my actual gas usage by 20% last winter on the previous year and given the cold winter we had I thought that was a result. This system allows me to control individual room temperatures with much more accuracy and more importantly how often the rads are active. There is really no need to have a boiler heating the whole house to 23C. For instance the bedroom rads only come on a for a few hours before bedtime then an hour before we wake.Rooms such as halls, landings and bathrooms are controlled to lower temps of around 18C. I put spring closing devices on all my internal doors to make it work though.

I put another  few inches of loft insulation in and got some free cavity wall insulation to boot which obviously contributed.

Do you not find the self closing devices a pain in the arse? Also not ideal for families with kids!

But like you say plenty of other ways that are less of a bind than forking out for PV's and air source heat pumps like loft & cavity insulation efficient boilers.

Don't get me wrong though that green deal in principle seems like a good idea. Things that I always wonder about with a lot of these things like air source heat pumps that people seem to be having installed along with PV's is what is the actuall life span of them and how costly are the to maintain so you keep getting the same output.

I had a new boiler fitted a couple of months back and my gas usage has gone down dramatically since and that's without the central heating being on. I really didn't realise how much an efficient boiler would make a difference.

I now vote this the most boring thread in WW :D

I've probably got the most energy inefficient house in Christendom, when British Gas sent my New Year bill I thought  "Well they can get fucked if they think I'm paying that!" and marched off purposefully with a torch and pen and paper to the meter...They'd underestimated the cost by about a further 50%.

I'm fucked if I know what to do about it without laying out shitloads of money, I can say one thing - I couldn't give a shit if curtains are naff, this November I plan to have my house favvering Omar Sharif's tent...

And I'm going to purchase tea-cosys for mine and mi birds' bonces - like them coffin doggers in that telly advert years ago. :)

Wife hates em. Must admit we have a wedge under the kitchen to living room door during the months when the heating is off and when we have a house full. Aye I am bit for a techie bore when it comes to household gadgets, but £2400 is over twice what I shell out for annual energy and I have a 3 storey, 4 bed detached. The difference more than paid for our all inclusive holiday for two in Egypt so when you look it it like that......

brother in law,and a pal were paying that much on gas bills, they said they couldn't afford to have an efficient boiler fitted.old ones were about 25 years+.both had Worcester combi boilers fitted with thermostatic radiator valves.never looked back bills reduced by about 60% minimum.

Been a cold summer where you are?

Apologies, misread that as the rest of what you wrote makes far more sense if you'd said with rather than without.

It's a combi and so showers/baths have made a difference already.

I will report back on the central heating side of things later in the year :)
