We've been wrestling with winter sun resorts for Feb an have settled on Thailand mid-Feb

 

Couple of nights on Bangkok and then somewhere south

 

But we're not sure on where

 

We don't want a load of pissed up gap year tossers. T'interweb says Phuket is Starbucks and KFC etc so we'd may as well go to Elevenarife as there...is that right?!

 

Mrs Jules had been 3 times but not since 2003 and I believe it's changed a lot

 

Anyone know where'd be best for a chill out on nice beaches, good local cuisine etc

Yes mate. They'll treat your kids as good as gold. My brother took his 3 year old and told me the Thai's loved spending time with his little lad.

JD if you and Smiffs can make a bit later you can be here for Songkran which is the Thai new year - its fucking great.

 

The traditional water festival for washing off the last year and making merit to bring good luck for the coming year has basically been replaced by a 4 day piss up and water fight. Everyone is on holiday, everyone joins in, its just ace.

Yes, but it's kind of the other way round than the SP for Jules. The beautiful deserted beaches obv have less going on.

 

Samui has some stuff, Phuket has much more because it's more developed. Don't get me wrong there are lots of beautiful places in Phuket outside of Patong, but it's developed and has no island charm.

 

How old are your kids? Bangkok's just a mental city so you'd be on the go there. There's theme parks and water parks etc.

 

I don't know if there are hotels with kids clubs etc

We've booked flights to and from Bangkok and we get 12 nights there with 2 more lost travelling

 

We're thinking 2 in Bk, then maybe 5 in Krabi and 5 in Koh Samui?

Fly Bangkok Airways rather than Air Asia down to Krabi, no messing about with baggage allowance etc plus you go from the same airport you fly into rather than the old one - easier to get to.

 

Krabi airport is only about 15 from a boat to Railay. It will be busy but not chocka that time of year so you could book a couple of nights and play it by ear.

 

I lived in Samui so if you need pointers let me know.

Depends where you go and what your kids enjoy I suppose. It's gonna be less water parks and fun fairs and more jungle walks, fishing and elephant rides.

 

Lots to do on the bigger Islands but it tends to be smaller scale than a resort would be.

Songkran in Chiang Mai was the most fun I've ever had in my adult life. If you tried it over here, it would all be kicking off within seconds!

Thai Smile are owned by Thai Airways so I wouldn't worry.

Sadly still run by the same incompetent and corrupt board as Thai which manages to make massive losses regularly. Ostensibly a public company but in reality just another thai-chinese family pocket lining exercise. Internals are only an hour so it doesn't matter who you fly with really.

If you head over to Samui, then the Ark bar is were it is happening during the day!

Captain, sadly due to mismanagement The Landmark isn't what it was, and nowadays it's not cheap for what you get.

 

Danny, when where you last in Samui? Ark Bar expanded massively, it's literally about 4 times bigger than it used to be now. Unfortunately for them Chaweng has a new police chief. Like all senior policemen in Thailand he bought the job, largely funded by neighbouring hotel owners who were fed up of the massive illegal noisy beach parties and they have now been brought to an end by the rozzers. Still have parties but they are much quieter and finish when they should now. Still hasn't affected the owner's Ferrari which shows how much he is making when you account for the 300% luxury car tax.

Yep, stayed at the Landmark a few years and would go back. Can also recommend koh Samui done on the same trip with a few days in Hong Kong.

Stuck my parents in the Peninsula..... Then the Chaweng Regent & then Merchant Court (Singapore)best holiday they had

Shit 2007 wow that's gone quick the few times I have been stayed at ALS hut I think that have closed now

Love the place, also phi phi island is a must if venturing over Krabi or Phuket way

Finally finalised the trip, done internal flights and hotels today

 

We've now gone for 3 nights in Bkk - ideally we want to do the bridge over the river Kwai but slightly worried that the election is 6 days before we arrive so all may be kicking off again??

 

Spent hours on where and which hotels after that but final gone for:

 

4 nights in Krabi; Au Nang - Aonang villa Resort. Will probably visit islands and stuff from there

 

Then 5 nights in Koh Samui; followed Flannel's advice of the Akaryn - it looks like a nice spot

 

Many thanks Flannel; if you fancy a beer when we're there I'll happily shout you a pint or two for the advice

River Kwai you can do as a day trip in a taxi who will wait for you, whatever is happening in the city shouldn't matter cos you'll be getting out of town.

You can get the train up and back to Kanchanaburi which is actually a nice way to see some of the country but there's only one train a day each way which means for a day trip you get about 40 minutes there! Not worth staying over if you only have 3 nights.

 

PM me your dates mate because the one thing to be wary of is that at election time there are blanket alcohol bans and sometimes they have some for example the weekend before. There's supposed to be a big push over the next few days to throw the election date out so anything could happen yet!

 

You'll love the islands and it will be nice and hot then! Defo up for a beer mate and I'll come up with some good places for you to go in Bkk too.
