We've been wrestling with winter sun resorts for Feb an have settled on Thailand mid-Feb

 

Couple of nights on Bangkok and then somewhere south

 

But we're not sure on where

 

We don't want a load of pissed up gap year tossers. T'interweb says Phuket is Starbucks and KFC etc so we'd may as well go to Elevenarife as there...is that right?!

 

Mrs Jules had been 3 times but not since 2003 and I believe it's changed a lot

 

Anyone know where'd be best for a chill out on nice beaches, good local cuisine etc

One of my friends has been to Langkawi and she reckons it's fantastic, she highly recommends it.

jules - i've done koh samui twice and kept away from the rabble in Chaweng.   Bophut and Natien Beach are good for the beaches and cuisine without all the tommy tourists

Pattaya, nice, quite no football yobs and very traditional. Plus Little Whitt tells me you can get pissed on by a lady boy for less than a fiver...........

I was going to offer some advice but Phuket

Personally - I'd have 2 nights in Bangkok and then fly to Samui.  Book 1 or 2 nights accomodation in Bophut.  You can play it by ear then and move to wherever you fancy.  Chewang is the horrible touristy bit (but still a nice beach) so I'd avoid that if you can.  If you're with your Mrs - Lamai is probably best avoided as it's full of girly bars - good laugh with her for one night out but she'd probably get pissed off with it during the daytime. 

 

Pretty much anywhere else on the Island is paradise, plus it's all accessable by motorbike which you can hire for about £3 a day plus fuel. One of the other plus points about Samui is than you can Island hop.  Ko Tao is about 30 mins by boat and has world class diving. You can do your 3 day scuba licence there for about £200 over 3 days inc accomodation and food.  And there is also Ko Phan Ngan which still has a bit of that laid back atmosphere that your Mrs describes (full moon party has gone shit mind).

 

Wherever you go - the food will be sensational so don't worry about that as a deciding factor.  Plus it's Thailand - pretty much anywhere you go you'll have a ball - but if you've got 2-3 weeks and want to see a few different places - the route above will do you well.

 

PS - Phuket is a hellhole.

on the other side of the Peninsula you have Koh Samui and Koh Phangan

I was in Ko Phangan 18 months ago - the place we were staying in was a lovely little family run place.  There was a fully stocked beer fridge where you could just go and help yourself - you just wrote what you'd taken in a little book by the side and then settled your bill at the end.  They also knocked out pre rolled joints if you asked for them - you just accounted for them in the honesty book as 'pringles'.

 

There were a lot of 'Pringles'.

Don't get me wrong - you could buy actual Pringles - they were the same price as 'Pringles' so it worked rather well.

 

Plus - the more 'Pringles' you smoked, the more you would desire Pringles.

If you make it a couple of weeks later then me & Smiffs might bump into you in Bangkok

Hua Hin is great. Went there after 2 days in Bangkok at the start.

 

Sofitel Silom in BK and then Marriott I think in HH, was fantastic.

JD if you and Smiffs can make a bit later you can be here for Songkran which is the Thai new year - its fucking great.

 

The traditional water festival for washing off the last year and making merit to bring good luck for the coming year has basically been replaced by a 4 day piss up and water fight. Everyone is on holiday, everyone joins in, its just ace.

Jules some good advice above.

 

If you want to see several places then the Andaman coast is your best bet. Fly into Krabi and you can get to phi phi, koh lanta, railay, kao lak, and more.

 

If you want to arrive and chill you can't go wrong with Samui. Agree with Kent dont stay in Chaweng or Lamai and the beach at Bophut isnt great, I would stay in Choeng Mon. If you want splash out try the Akaryn, Sala Samui or Tongsai Bay. Bophut good for eating, drinking and shopping. Chaweng good for a night out and thah whiskey buckets. Lamai good for saturday night with free muay thai, lady boxing and if you are really lucky ladyboy boxing!

 

Hua Hin is geared more for older people.

 

I'd rather go to Lloret de Mar than Phuket.

 

Someone mentioned Langkawi - it is beautiful and has lots of undeveloped places, but malaysian food isnt as nice as thai, it's still a muzzer place so you can't sup in some restaurants which is a no no for me.

 

As a wild card - Cambodia is great and fucking dirt cheap.

Been busy for a couple of days but cheers everyone

 

We've booked flights to and from Bangkok and we get 12 nights there with 2 more lost travelling

 

We're thinking 2 in Bk, then maybe 5 in Krabi and 5 in Koh Samui?
