October 18, 200421 yr Better songwriters than Lennon and McCartney according to some music critic on that show on C4 last night. BOLLOX.
October 18, 200421 yr as a songwriter myself, I'd have to agree with the C4 bloke. I think Lennon and McCartney were very good.. not what they are made out to be. Too many songs sounded too similar, and they seemed only to write about 1 subject - Love. Yes, in the 60s, fair enough - not much else to write about .. but.. for me, Marr and Morrissey captured more of what life is, not just love. That's the key in writing great songs, getting people to identify. Personally, I relate alot better to what The Smiths were saying that "hey lets love everyone" of the Beatles.
October 18, 200421 yr The 5miths are very underated, ignorant people believing it's all Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, not knowing about quality like Vicar in a Tutu, Sweet and Tender Hooligan, Bigmouth Strikes Again, You Just Haven't Heard it Yet Baby... They captured 80's Manchester perfectly, post punk, post Joy Division, in Thatcher's strangle hold. Thing is, Manchester has been rejuvenated now and Morrissey and Marr's Manchester has gone and they sound a bit dated. The Queen Is Dead still does well in polls of people's favourite album, and is one of the few albums that not only holds your attention but makes the hairs on your neck stand on end at the same time - absolute ragging genius. Carlos I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving England is mine and it owes me a living

October 19, 200421 yr i thought the cheeky girls were the best song writers ever..... 8-[ in all seriousness though i'm personally not a fan of the smiths or morissey. hear them all the time in work and its depressing. Manager either plays. smiths/morrissey/happy mondays/charlatans/oasis/kasbian/beatles/same motown album.. had this now every day since last novemberapart from christmas where we had christmas music. gets a little tedious. although i prefer music that motivates me and has a sence of happiness to it.
October 19, 200421 yr i agree with morrisey/marr i think what the guy was saying is that AS A PARTNERSHIP they were better, lennon OR mccartney wrote the majority of the songs, they rarely wrote a song 50/50, especially in the prime of their career. i think about 2 songs of sgt pepper were written together, the rest individually
October 19, 200421 yr Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my heed it's all over, i thinks its callled. great song.
