Boby Brno
Difficult one this. The best days cricket I’ve seen live was the 5th day at OT in 2005 and ended in a draw. The most exciting finish was the Headingley test this year on day 4. Whatever decision they make, it won’t be for the sake of the fans. Traf
Aren't most of our Test matches 4-day affairs?

Increasingly yes. But not always. A day lost to rain in a four day test though, and you could see some of them becoming little more than practice matches. One of the concerns in recent times is the lack of batsmen being able to gradually build an innings whilst facing good bowling on a pitch that offers a bit to both sides. Reduced time on the face of it seems unlikely to help. I know test cricket isn't for everyone, but we now have t20 in addition to one dayers to satisfy society's demand for quicker gratification. Having a gentle listen to a sporting event unfolding like a game of chess over 5 days is unique, and can be done whilst at work etc. Would be a great shame if it started to dwindle. Site Supporter MickyD Posted January 1, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted January 1, 2020 Perhaps they could schedule the use of the pitch for the full five days and only use the fifth in cases of weather affected games.

Around the world, most tests lose about NZ$1m, even after income generated from broadcasters and spectators. The fifth day - when grounds have to pay for staffing and security costs even if the match does not make it that far - is particularly costly

Recoup some money and do a bit of good?

That's a decent idea as a compromise. The other gripe though is that the over rates are so shocking that to get the full 360 overs of a four day test in they'd probably need a fifth day anyway! Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted January 2, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted January 2, 2020 Over rates are a big thing. Could dock runs, but it's difficult to measure how much time is lost due to chasing the ball in the field. Maybe insist that a spin bowler is selected for every game, and if over rate drops too low for a session or so, then he has to be bowled until it comes up again.
