The weirdest thing is how some people (including I suspect, some people of here) are actively hoping for it. Like it would be a good thing. My mind boggles.

I wouldn't dismiss it as utter bollocks per se. The guy is learned in his field. So it's worth listening to him - even if that's just as a warning about the way things could theoretically end up unless we start listening to each other and finding some common ground. But I just can't see it. And neither can a lot of other academics. And I doubt the security services can either. Although I'm sure they plan for it. Isolated periods of unrest - almost certainly. Civil war. Hugely unlikely.

It's not a study though - it's an essay. There's no dataset, no statistical modeling, no tested inputs and no methodology. And it's very much one voice. And even people in his own institution are rebutting him. It's just been picked up and sensationalised. Like these things almost always are.

I'll bet you at he same time if you like? Here's a working definition from AI. If you and Bolty are both happy with this as a working definition - then I'm all in. If there's someone willing to act as arbitrator? Intensity — the violence must be protracted and sustained, not sporadic riots or isolated clashes Organization — the non-state party must have some command structure, ability to plan and carry out sustained operations, and control over territory or people

I'll have you a £1000 wager right now that there's not a civil war in the UK in the next 5 years.

I really REALLY like CBT (not cock and ball torture before anyone makes that joke) 😁 But he came to us with a reputation for being injury prone and managed 7 games - a couple of which were off the bench. I think if he was fit - he could well have been the most talented player at the club. Some of the things he did in that brief spell were prem quality - let alone champ, but I think he's knackered. I won't be sad if we resigned him necessarily - but I think we need to be looking elsewhere unfortunately. We don't have the money to be carrying passengers.- Ann Widdecombe

I'l think it's fair to say they are fringe opinions https://ukandeu.ac.uk/civil-war-in-the-uk-nightmare-or-far-right-fantasy/- Ann Widdecombe
I'm not sure I agree. I'm not sure the UK really knows what it's place in the world is anymore. I think colonialism is still a major factor in the way the country sees itself and it's responsibilities. Not necessarily that we want a return to it. Brexit I'd argue has more of an immediate impact. Both in terms of the jump in numbers of immigrants and asylum speakers since we pulled out - but more in that where we acted as the arbiter between the states and the EU, we're now having to 'pick sides' and we're not clear on which way to go now those relationships are more polarised. We need some sort of New Deal type of leader. Who is going to articulate the next 50 years and get some broad agreement (if not total agreement) from the racist thickos and the bean munching lefties. Otherwise we really do have two camps and there is an increasing danger of civil unrest.- Ann Widdecombe
No - but I think we're in a particularly difficult position here. Post colonial, post Brexit, lack of a clear vision about what type of country we want to be, disfunctional political class, divided populations, hugely diminished armed forces, begining to see the first tangible effects of global warming etc and so on and so forth. Maybe it's the same everywhere - but I just notice it more here because this is where I live.- Meanwhile in Israel
The gif of this is even better! 🤣- Ann Widdecombe
I've no doubt it will get worse sadly. This country is on a very dangerous, and not very pleasant trajectory at the moment- Meanwhile in Israel
Like I said - they've not released any details - so nobody knows. He might be Hamas. He might not. But even if he was Hamas and HAD been behaving in a way which is prohibited by the Geneva convention. The answer wouldn't be for a democratic nation to behave in the same way. I hold Israel to a higher moral standard than I would somebody from a terrorist organisation. And I think things like the Geneva convention are what is supposed to separate US (Western liberal democracies) from THEM (terrorists). It shouldn't be a race to the bottom.- Ann Widdecombe
There are some proper divs about- Meanwhile in Israel
They're treating him in a way that is prohibited under the Geneva convention and is very likely a war crime. And they've not released the details of what his name is. Or what he is being detained for. So what you're looking at is extrajudicial treatment with forced nudity and torture. So we don't know what he's done (or not done). Or that he's a 'cunt'.- Politics - Part 2
