February 3, 20242 yr Author I'm not so sure. I always said the breakup of the UK might be one of the more predictable outcomes following Brexit. I think this might be the start of it in NI. We're lucky that NS has gone a bit potty as far as Scotland is concerned. That's bought us a bit more time. Anyway - we'll have to see how this progresses.

Today is the first day there’s a nationalist first minister . she can’t decide anything without consent from the deputy first minister so it’s more symbolic. the fact is a Sinn Fein first minister even more so quite historic considering in my life time people from the nationalist tradition didn’t always have a vote and the changing of electoral boundaries to prevent electoral success for those that could really prevented any real chance of any nationalist from any part getting a seat in power . The GFA paved the way for power sharing, it’s merely a result of it being shared rather than controlled.

February 3, 20242 yr The majority of Northern Ireland is still Unionist and I don't believe either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland will ready to make the concessions necessary to live together as a unified state for quite a long time

Most of NI voted to stay. Most of NI is unionist. The supposition that Brexit has reshaped the landscape in that way is therefore flawed.

Bit simplistic that, assuming one equates the other . most people in NI loyalties lie with what’s best for them and their families Brexit has undoubtedly shaped the landscape , but is unconnected to whether the first minister is Sinn Fein or DUP.
February 3, 20242 yr Ireland has thrived in the EU. Seeing as Northern Ireland is frequently forgotten about or marginalised by the UK government, I"d be surprised if some unionists weren't thinking they might be much better off in a united Ireland.
