Corner!

Corner to Bolton Wanderers these days means that within 2-3 touches we are back defending in our own half. Awful, do we do any training on corners or was that Craddock to blame?.

1 in 10 corners result in a goal- Mourinho famously said only in England are corners celebrated like a goal.

Why train to play a certain way all week, and then aimlessly throw it in the box?

Because with good execution it can be a great goal threat?

See Arsenal and Villas current set piece set ups.

England nearly won a euros nailing them.

Absolutely, that arsenal goal at spurs was a classic

the art of set play goals doesn’t go away  and it should be used imo especially if you have some big units

I bet 1 in 50,000 are scored from not beating the first man.

Arsenal brought in a set piece coach a couple of years back and three of their last four goals v Spurs have come from them

Does help that Spurs' keeper is v dodgy on crosses though

For us yes. It's been a weakness throughout Evatt's tenure.

I saw Van Dijk's goal last night and assume that is what Santos is supposed to be doing standing right on the keeper. Looks effective - biggest man getting a header from 3 yards out. But it needs some movement from Santos and more importantly, corners that beat the first man.

As big as Santos is, from a standing jump he’s not going to beat a 6ft keeper with arms like a chimp.

Steaming in from the edge of the box would have keeper and defenders looking over their shoulders.

It would also look like we mean business. Let’s get back to shitting defences up.

Decades ago Terry Venables managing Palace had them absolutely honed for dead ball play. Free kicks or corners were worked on and I remember him being challenged about it. Almost as if he was sort of cheating & these goals should count for less.

It has been an Evatt blind spot throughout his tenure ... with maybe one period where we had a modicum of success. If we don't work on it, don't expect these to work, then they won't. A corner hitting the first defender is unforgivable, as is a free kick which floats right over everyone or lobs straight to the keeper.

I leap to the presumption that we don't practice them, coz if we do we're proper, proper shite at it.
