Corner!

Corner to Bolton Wanderers these days means that within 2-3 touches we are back defending in our own half. Awful, do we do any training on corners or was that Craddock to blame?.

Craddock is to blame for everything even if it is raining !

I'm sure I read that we scored the second highest number of set pieces in League 1 last season.

I wonder whether teams actually score from corners at all as frequently these days. And maybe all supporters (bar those of the specialist teams set up to win games that way) think they are naff at corners.

Same with direct free kicks. I seem to remember far more being scored than there seems to be these days.

There is certainly room for improvement. No point with our squad in sticking high crosses into a box full of giants IMO - although I do like the thing where someone, usually George or Rico runs across their goal line in front of the goalie from the opposite side. But I'd rather we didn't crowd into the goal area and we've overused the far post ball to be headed back across.- instead we should group just outside the box and make different runs from there, some going in, some going short and some staying around the edge - I just feel we'd get more shooting opportunities by starting the corner routines 5 yards further out.

And I hate that we leave the edge of our own box undefended when we face corners.

Exeter scored off a corner, Huddersfield's 3rd was off a corner.

Please someone enlighten me, what is the purpose in Santos going up for a corner.

When we get a corner these days  I inwardly think 'bet our keeper touches it before theirs does'.

I'm usually  right.

And there'sa few older chaps in our corner who commence singing 'score from a corner, we're going to score from a corner'.

Seconds later it's changed to 'we never score from a corner'.

Oh yes, the fun never ends.

I think we'd be better leaving him about 25 yards out and having him charge into the area just as the corner is taken.

to have his shirt ripped from his back and the ref to ignore it

He stands by the goalkeeper

i get that but leave to someone else, he should be steaming in wheater style

Corners are not all they are cracked up to be.
you know not many are scored from a cross off a corner.
don’t get over zealous when you win a corner as often false hope.
get a set piece coach in such as Craig hignett and watch results improve.
keep faith in the club don’t lose it.

But he doesn't have the skillset to head it in a particular direction.  That's not a dig at him, I know all about his qualities, but someone like Dempsey or Toal can "aim" a header, Iredale could.  Santos can't, Zat Knight was the same, its nothing to do with size.   Both could win headers for fun defensively where it doesn't matter where the ball ends up as long as its away from goal.  I always assume Santos is there to cause chaos whether that's blocking the keeper or occupying their biggest defender, but he isn't scoring or even assisting with a flick on.

Had the same issue in my lads U15 team with a defender, close season training and he’s gagging for set pieces

it can be trained

He hasn't got the fortitude to carry that off.

It beggars belief a 6ft 3 massive cunt like him never remotely causes a problem in their box.

We went up on Beevers and Wheater scoring headers.

About the size of ME

Remember when Evatt first came and we used to try them ridiculous training-ground routines from corners.

Never worked and made ourselves look daft.

At least we now waste them all in more traditional fashion.

I'm not saying they don't occur. I just don't think they occur as frequently as they used to.

And it's just a general feeling. I've not got any data to back this up.

I’d piss my sides on Saturday if we left 2 up front on a corner 🤣

From there-on-in we could claim the 11 men back approach as “A Craddock”

11 men back in the box is definitely a load of craddocks either way.

1 in 10 corners result in a goal- Mourinho famously said only in England are corners celebrated like a goal.

Why train to play a certain way all week, and then aimlessly throw it in the box?
