JayJay- the ??1bn you quote is the direct cost of asylum seekers, however you must consider the secondary costs if you are to offer a balanced view. For example two secondary costs could include: 1) the percentage of benefit fraud undertaken by asylum seekers 2) the cost to the NHS of treating asylum seekers, a topical example being the costs currently being incurred treating TB, a disease that the UK had all but eradicated 50 years ago.
