Funny how much we know about cricket. Only discussing the poor form of Bell and Vaughan last night...... one has knocked 166 and the other is 50-odd not out!

Not impressed with Pietersen at the end then, that was bone headed. Should be 340 odd for 3, never mind 5. Still would have taken it this morn though.

But do you agree with nightwatchmen? Pointless. Cannot see why we keep doing it. Surely Flintoff is good enough to defend his wicket for 10 minutes.

And if we are going down the nightwatchman route - I'd use Giles. At least he can bat a bit.

 

Agree about Pietersen. A bit selfish. Tomorrow morning with nearly 400 on the board would have been the time to start showing some flare and bravado.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. In that case today, yes, and in a way he did his job as Flintoff didn't have to come in to face a few high risk balls last thing at night. Coming in with an over or so to go, especially when they've just taken the new ball, is a no win situation, you're on a hiding to absolutely nothing. That's why they give the job to a tail ender. The whole idea is, who would you rather lose? Giles I would say is a bit too good a player to sacrifice the way a nightwatchman is, he averages over 20 in tests.

Going back to the nightwatchman topic. Say Australia were all out and England then had to bat for the last two overs of the day. The two openers would come out to bat not nightwatchmen. What is the difference between the middle of the innings and the start of the innings.

Openers are openers because they are meant to good at keeping out the best bowlers when the ball is brand new and conditions are most helpful for a bowler.

Bigtoe - spotted your kid today - presume he's the lad who sits next but one to me at the Reebok. He was in M stand today or thereabouts. Everytime I saw him he was on his way back from bar with a few beers. Certainly looked worse each time I saw him.
