BMI will officially accept an expired bus pass on domestic flights though wouldn't like to try it. Though last time I flew from Heathrow domestically I checked in online and at no point was I asked for id.

It's just another Govt. con trick. Buy a 10 year passport that only lasts 9.5 years! Do they give you a 5% rebate? Do they f??ck!

flew to spain a couple of years back with someone who's passport had expired about 6 months before. apparently, they are not too strict in some EU countries as long as the expiration date wasnt more than a year ago.

Of course. Although England is not part of the Schengen Deal, you can still enter any country in the EU if you hold a valid identification; since Identity Cards are yet to be issued in Britain, you have to travel with your Passport, as long as it hasn't expired. Chances are you won't show it on arrival but you will do so on departure.
