Figo free to face England

Portugal captain Luis Figo has been cleared to face England after escaping punishment for his headbutt on Mark van Bommel.

Figo appeared to headbutt Holland midfielder van Bommel in the second half of Sunday's bad-tempered clash.

The Internazionale winger was booked for the incident by referee Valentin Ivanov, but it was suggested Figo could face further punishment for the offence.

However, Fifa insist Figo has no case to answer and is free to play against England in their quarter final on Saturday.

Fifa communications director Markus Siegler said: "He was sanctioned immediately by the referee at the time.

"The referee's report came in last night and is being analysed by the relevant people but it is very unlikely anything will happen as he has been sanctioned already.

"It is only where there is a clear disciplinary issue which has not been acted upon by the referee that the (disciplinary) committee can look at it."

The news is a boost for Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari as he is already without key midfield duo Deco and Costinha for the game with England because of suspension.

Bollox. If that had have been an England player:

A) Would have been sent off anyway

B) FIFA would have banned the player

how can the ref claim to have seen that?

Let's have it right, it was never a sending off.

It wasn't violent conduct, and it wasn't striking an opponent.

Ungentlemanly conduct, nothing more, and that warrants a booking.

Van Bommel should have been shown a second yellow for collapsing in a heap without good reason.

No complaints for Deco, mind, and certainly no complaints for Costinha.

Didn't see it then? someone tell you in the lift what happend?

Really?

Deco did nowt wrong, he was gonna fanny about with the ball - but he was assaulted before he had chance. The Dutch lad didn't even get booked for throwing him to the ground!!

Figo might not have landed with much impact, but it's one of those 'can't do it' laws. It's not a yellow card - if the ref sees it, it has to be red.

Watch the replay - the ref did not see the Figo head butt.

Hopefully the report will show that Figo got booked for something else in the ruck that the ref did see and FIFA can still act on the head butt.

Nice!

Not entirely unexpected, but nice all the same. :K

Paranoia, there's a lot of it about.

The ref was poor last night and as a direct result we have a better chance of beating the Portugese. FACT.

I saw the head butt proper for the first time tonight and I'm sorry to say that Fifa need to use video evidence against him, it was a nasty headbutt. Most players stick their heads in the opponents face but Figo blatantly butted him

Bang on mate. There is no way the ref saw that and if FIFA don't act, it's a fooking disgrace. Guaranteed that any England player doing the same would be suspended immediately. Officials have been a fooking shambles.

So,not only have they got away with the head butt, the cheeky fcukers are now appealing to FIFA,trying to get Deco's first yellow card against the Dutch rescinded - so he can play against us ](*,)

Deco was lucky his first yellow wasn't a red! [-X

Paranoia. It will be proved as such when we win the World Cup.

Nice to pick up on some positive waves on here. Always knew we'd make the quarters. Anything beyond is fantastic. I am just starting to get that 'this is on' feeling.

after our performances so far, I'm getting more of a "how long can we go on" feeling

Well Deco is a definate no no for the game now that FIFA have told him to 'do one' with his appeal.

1 down, one to go. Someone send a spot of video evidence to the Sepp Blatter bloke, please!

can't win with this one

if you take the stance that ref's decision is final and action has been taken - figo plays, deco doesn't

if you use video evidence to prove whether players should be booked or not, then deco plays and figo doesn't

figo in, deco out is much better for us

Oh definately. Hopefully Figo'll be wearing his special extra lazy boots come Saturday. :D

neither in is how it should be [-(

Good luck for next saturday, you'll gonna need it :p

I thank the british press for "pump" figo's EGO, he'll make the game of his career. Qait and see.

1-0 for Portugal, and it will be Ricardo that will make the goal with his striped hands in a corner.

cheers.

Fook off Pancho.

how?

which of his yellows would be recinded?

a cynical hack that, on another day, could have been a straight red

refusing to give the ball back delaying the restart of the game
