June 26, 200620 yr Portugal captain Luis Figo has been cleared to face England after escaping punishment for his headbutt on Mark van Bommel. Figo appeared to headbutt Holland midfielder van Bommel in the second half of Sunday's bad-tempered clash. The Internazionale winger was booked for the incident by referee Valentin Ivanov, but it was suggested Figo could face further punishment for the offence. However, Fifa insist Figo has no case to answer and is free to play against England in their quarter final on Saturday. Fifa communications director Markus Siegler said: "He was sanctioned immediately by the referee at the time. "The referee's report came in last night and is being analysed by the relevant people but it is very unlikely anything will happen as he has been sanctioned already. "It is only where there is a clear disciplinary issue which has not been acted upon by the referee that the (disciplinary) committee can look at it." The news is a boost for Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari as he is already without key midfield duo Deco and Costinha for the game with England because of suspension. Bollox. Van Bommel should have been shown a second yellow for collapsing in a heap without good reason. No complaints for Deco, mind, and certainly no complaints for Costinha.

Deco did nowt wrong, he was gonna fanny about with the ball - but he was assaulted before he had chance. The Dutch lad didn't even get booked for throwing him to the ground!! Figo might not have landed with much impact, but it's one of those 'can't do it' laws. It's not a yellow card - if the ref sees it, it has to be red.
June 26, 200620 yr Watch the replay - the ref did not see the Figo head butt. Hopefully the report will show that Figo got booked for something else in the ruck that the ref did see and FIFA can still act on the head butt.

Someone send a spot of video evidence to the Sepp Blatter bloke, please! can't win with this one if you take the stance that ref's decision is final and action has been taken - figo plays, deco doesn't if you use video evidence to prove whether players should be booked or not, then deco plays and figo doesn't figo in, deco out is much better for us

June 28, 200620 yr if you use video evidence to prove whether players should be booked or not, then deco plays how? which of his yellows would be recinded? a cynical hack that, on another day, could have been a straight red refusing to give the ball back delaying the restart of the game
