A young lad of 20 on here mentioned Burnden at it's peak , but when was this excactly?

I'd guess it's true peak in terms of attendancies was in the 50's,this was before my time but i think it was fantastic in the mid to late seventies,and again from the mid nineties - to it's closure in 1997 . What do you reckon?

I'm also a mid/late 70s person so the peak I remember was Everton in League Cup semis.

I don`t think you`ll get a more intimidating atmosphere than when we played Wolves in the play off semi final in 95.

1976 was the biggest crowd for a game i have seen at burnden,46,584 for the F.a cup game against Newcastle

It was also one of the seasons when we just missed out on promotion,although saying that we started off with a gate of 8,786 against Fulham.The crowds only came when we started winning and looking like getting promoted ,by the end of the season we were getting around 24,000.

in the first minute or so a bolton player blocked a pass and the ball went for a throw in front of the burnden.

 

Everyone in the Paddock screamed 'our ball' and gave the liner hells abuse when he flagged for Wolves.

 

you could see from the players reaction and the refs face that it was going to be one of those nights.

 

certainly the finest and possibly the most partisan atmosphere I have even known in a football ground.

I stood up in the top corner of the burnden for the last two seasons there.

There were many great atmpospheres in there.

Its weird really cos til then i was a bit young to be over there so i was sat in many road marvelling at the "ants"

 

Looking back i moved over to stand in the burnden just as it was getting packed again, lucky really to have experienced it.

 

The wolves one really really sticks out, lofty at half time was mint!!!

 

At the time as much i as i thought it was amazing i thought that was only cos i was there in it...but ...as some of the videos members have posted here show, burnden park really could look intimidating, like some mad turkish ground.

 

Im just so chuffed i got to stand in the burnden terrace during those good times in the 90s before it vanished.

i only saw games from 88 onwards but that Wolves game was the best atmosphere i ever

saw there, and maybe Swindon in ccc s/f 2nd leg

Interestingly, Nigel Sheppard's site lists the crowd at the Wolves game as 20041.

As they had the corner of the Embankment and a fair bit of the end of the Paddock they must have had over 3k there.

So <17000 Bolton fans generated one of the best atmospheres ever.

Size of crowd is irrelevant really when it comes to atmosphere.

Not many women and kids in that 17,000 v Wolves.

 

Remember, the crowd was only 17,000 in the Inonu when we played Besiktas!

As I've said before I think this is myth-making cobblers. The Lever end seats were full of families and kids. The other seats had always been so. So there's the Manny Rd and a truncated Paddock - with people mixing with the groups they want to mix with. That's the key. The atmosphere came not because of the numbers (as you rightly say) or because of the make up - it comes because people want it to come.

(As an aside, didn't someone show that the official 17k figure for Besiktas was bollox - after all, that would make the re-vamped stadium only half full?? )

1950's, large crowds, no segregation, no safety fences, no aggro and a great atmosphere. Guess that shows my age.
