JOEY O'BRIEN will get his first taste of competitive action in well over 12 months when he takes to the field for Wanderers Reserves on Wednesday evening.

Jimmy Phillips' title-winners open their defence of the Barclays Premier League Reserve League North with a game against Manchester City at the County Ground, Leyland (Kick Off 7:00pm).

And the fixture marks the return to fitness of the Republic of Ireland international, who was ruled out of action for all of last season with a knee injury.

The young full-back is obviously delighted to be back and cannot wait to put his boots on against Manchester City's second-string.

He said: "I feel very good and have trained for the past couple of weeks. After 15 months out, without playing a game, I am really looking forward to playing some football again."

Am I the only one who thinks time and rose tinted glasses has placed O'Brien on a bit of a pedestal during his injury lay off.

he was hardly the greatest defender when he was in the team so im not going to expect him to come back any better. anyway the lads supposed to be a midfielder so not to sure where that leaves us.

He is a f?cking kid for god's sake, a promising kid who played about 20 games. Bit early to knock him.

What is it with us and homegrown players?

A return to round pegs in square holes.

IMO I will be amazed if O'Brien overtakes Hunt for the right back place.

O'Brien had a good first season but thats about it.

Any judgement needs to be reserved. 15 Months is a long time wout 0of the game but the lad had age on his side. I still think he will be quite a way of Premiership match fitness though.

OBrien did well, but no better than Hunt, had he not replaced the boo boys favourite his reviews may not have been so rave
