Puppy Death YouTube Video Condemned

Video footage of a US Marine apparently throwing a puppy to its death and broadcast on YouTube has outraged media watchdogs and animal rights groups.

 

Marine holds puppy up to cameraThe pictures show the soldier smiling as he holds the puppy by the scruff of the neck.

 

After another Marine comments how cute it is, the black-and-white animal is hurled off a rocky cliff into a gully below.

 

A yelping sound is heard as it flips through the air.

 

The video was viewed tens of thousands of times before it was taken down by YouTube on Tuesday "due to terms of use violation".

 

The row follows outrage that video of a woman being gang-raped could be viewed on the site - and was seen by hundreds of people - before it was reported and taken off.

 

John Beyer, director of campaign group mediawatch-uk, told Sky News Online: "It's all very well for YouTube to say their service is moderated by its own viewers but this self-policing plainly doesn't work.

 

"Nobody wants to limit freedom of expression but that comes with responsibility, and here the regulation needs to be at the centre of YouTube's operations, not with its viewers on the periphery.

"Videos showing cruelty to animals and the rape of women appal everyone and should never get on to their site."

 

YouTube's Community Guidelines state: "When a video gets flagged as inappropriate, we review the video to determine whether it violates our Terms of Use - flagged videos are not automatically taken down by the system."

 

Animal rights groups say they have been flooded with emails and calls. Many people expressed shock and anger on websites and blogs.

 

"We're appalled," said Martin Mersereau, a spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

 

The US Marine Corps called it "deplorable and contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine."

 

"We do not tolerate this type of behaviour and will take appropriate action," it said in a statement.

 

The alleged name of the Marine who threw the puppy, a 22-year-old lance corporal, was uttered in the video and now has been widely circulated on the internet.

Lets get this right, if I posted a gang rape vid on Youtube, I'd be expectin a knock on the door sometime between 4am and 6am tomorrow morning.

 

If I posted a vid of me killing a dog, I'd expect some left wing fruitcake to burn my house down.

 

So how do folk get away with it?
