YATESY Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Mikel Alonso is Mr May on the BWFC official calendar. Take yourself back to August and the excitement and anticipation of the new season. Who out of the new players has been the biggest disappointment compared to what you expected? The list is plentiful; Alonso, Wilhelmsson, Braatan, Cid, Dzemaili, McCann, Samuel, Guthrie etc etc For me it has to be Braatan. A full international with plenty of caps and plenty of goals. His club were desperate for him to stay and we beat a number of other clubs to his signature. What the f?ck happened? Did we sign his brother by mistake?
enzo gambaro Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Wilhelmsson for me. I'd seen him play for Roma and Nantes and he always looked the part. A little bit inconsistent, granted, but what winger isn't? He had the pace and the skill (and the fit missus) to be a big part of Sammy Lee's brave new world, and he never got a sniff. My biggest problem with Lee (apart from the results) was his reluctance to use the players he had signed to make his system work.

Same here Enzo - I know wingers are rarely consistent, but I was looking forward to finally seeing someone exploit some width
Zico Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Dzemali has been a let down though that could quite easily be down to his injury the fact that he's still linked to decent sides makes me wonder exactly what the problem is

Rembrandt Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Dzemaili for me. Had (still has ?) a good reputation, young, experienced, leader/captain ....... sounded a great prospect if he could adapt to Prem. Could have been lynchpin of the team, taking over from Campo. Still think we should keep him & give him a full season.

Re Braaten & Willy-they never really had a chance or opportunity, did they? (Braaten looks cack, but Willy did some reasonable things)

As previously posted I follow Real Sociedad pretty closely and for the past few years have flown over at least once a season. Mikel Alonso is not a winger but an up and down central midfielder, he gets plenty of running in. If we sell Faye and get him in that will be good business.

The ones I've highlighted - think they have actually done ok and not disappointed. With an end product to his game - Guthrie could become a very good footballer. This could come with experience. Mccann - we knew what we were getting when we bought him, honest hard working no frills sort of player and he's done ok. Wilhelmsson the biggest disappointment for me

The Conductor Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I thought Alonso showed potential to be a decent player. Especially the Everton game where if my memory serves me correctly, he hit the bar twice with a couple of rasping strikes. Would have been interesting to see how he would have played had he joined a stable team, as opposed to one which had radically changed its personnel and formation under Lee

Cid played 2 games in the Champions League for a poor Bordeaux side, he didn't play in the side that qualified as he'd been out on loan in the French 2nd division. They came 3rd in their group, dropped into the UEFA and went straight out of that in the round of 32. He literally had stepped out of League Two.
Zico Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Still think we should keep him & give him a full season. aye, but you'll know what'll happen next he'll be sh?t hot next season and leave on a free at the end of the season when his contract is up the board will be blasted for lacking ambition and not offering him a new deal this summer
Leyther_Matt Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Although I was disappointed with Wilhelmsson, he never really got the game time nor have we played the right system for him to be a success - the first genuine winger we've had for years but we just didn't have any balance with the lack of an equally attack-minded wide player on the other flank. On that basis, I think Braaten has been the bigger disappointment as I never really expected much from Alonso.
