superjohnmcginlay Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 As Sidebottom was injured, Freddie should have been his replacement, or Hoggard as discussed.Failing that, you look to experienced internationals like Simon Jones and Steve Harmison. Or Tramlett who has been permanent 12th man. If Freddie had been used as Sidebottom's replacement: either Collingwood would have hung on to his place (due to score soon! can bowl and is a great fielder) or another specialist batsman could have played, rather than the tail starting at 6 with the dreadful Ambrose. The batting line-up should/could have been: Cook Strauss Vaughan (currently only in team, because he's captain!) Pietersen Bell Collingwood / Specialist Batsman Flintoff Broad Ambrose (wk) (no.9 is more realistic) Anderson Panesar A strong batting line-up and Flintoff / Anderson is a good new ball pairing with Broad / Collingwood / Panesar as backup. Finally, you have to wonder what messages the selectors are sending out by selecting this Pattinson bloke. Harmison, Hoggard and Jones have had form and fitness issues over the past couple of years, but were instrumental in our fairly recent successes. They were sent off to their counties to get fit, get some overs in and take wickets. So, off they go and play county cricket: Harmison's got 34 wickets, Jones has 29, Hoggard has 22 and Saj Mahmood has 28. Yet no recall for any of them. Instead they bring a fat Aussie in with limited first class experience and he's 30 already. Fully agree, Jones needs a full season and id expect him to play in the ashes next year, Ambrose needs to go and either Foster or Prior to replace him.
globaldiver Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Fully agree, Jones needs a full season and id expect him to play in the ashes next year, Ambrose needs to go and either Foster or Prior to replace him. Prior? Surely you want your best keeper?
superjohnmcginlay Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Prior? Surely you want your best keeper? Prior is the better batsman IMO granted he is prone to the odd clanger, so do you substitue runs for a better gloveman?
Traf Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Prior? Surely you want your best keeper? You need your best keeper. Ideally 5 specialist batsmen, 4 good bowlers, your best keeper and Flintoff as all rounder. If one of your batsmen can bowl too, that's a bonus: as is the ability of the keeper to grab a few runs. Most people would be happy if the keeper averages 20 runs per innings: a good keeper will save you that many, so is under less pressure to score runs.
Casino Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 (edited) if the keeper has to bat at 6, then it needs to be prior - with a tail of panesar, anderson and sidebottom, you need more than 20 from the wk my argument with the selectors over tremlett is that he can't be trusted to last 5 days now, bearing in mind anderson went in with a back niggle, and flintoff possibly has some worries around him, theres no way tremlett can play so why keep him hanging around harmison should never play again hoggard does seem a surprising omission especially against a team with smith in top and bottom of it, the toss - and some weak umpiring on the amla catch - decided this game Edited July 20, 2008 by Casino

He made only 38; I suppose at 70-odd for 4 at the best time for bowling, possibly. Was England's batting not a huge contributory factor?
Casino Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 twas a factor, but the sa were no better on friday, so that suggests to me in those conditions theyd have been all out for sub 250 too i reckon theyd have been 5 down for 110 ish if amla had gone as he should have done and then its a different game
M G WHITES Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Time for Vaughan to "take a rest"? .Bolton on SKYSPORT 2
M G WHITES Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Sorry don't get you. Bolton were on Skysports 2,which i was watching instead of that piss poor effort from our cricket team.

fruitbat69 Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 Went today and what a long day as an England fan it was even though the weather was top notch. We looked ineffective today as a bowling unit. Losing Strauss and Vaughan were a killer blow and can't see us batting 2 days unlike SA to save the test. BTW if you thought BWFC stewards were bad you want to see them today. Total jobsworths they were beach balls were confiscated and people thrown out for not handing them over. Same went for the beer snakes. All a bit of fun but sadly stewards had no sense of humour. About 6 people legged it on the field and stewards frogmarched them out.Even a lass ran on and looked like they were gonna throw away the key the way they manhandled her.

Winding the stewards up is part of the test match experience these days. Running them all over the stands with a beer snake singing have you every kissed a girl, usually works a treat. The ones at Old Trafford really are mongalongs.
Traf Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 F?cking shower of shite: England. Another abysmal abject betting performance today. They sent Anderson in as night watchman to protect the "real" batsmen. He stuck around for 80 balls: scoring 34. A pity Strauss, Vaughan, Pietersen etc didn't do the same. Then Broad makes a mockery of the whole innings by top scoring.
craignaylor Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 I reckon they should put vaughan bk in his county to get some runs and the team should be Cook Strauss Bell Pietersen Collingwood Chris Read (much better with both bat and gloves) Flintoff Broad Anderson Sidebottom Panesar Collingwood should stay in the team because the big influence he is on the field with his fielding he also is a run scorer and good bowler who can keep one end tight. Chris Read in for Ambrose because hes a different class with the gloves and even watches the ball into the gloves unlike Ambrose, he also is a great batter.
Traf Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Bell can't bat at 3. Collingwood needs a break as much as Vaughan does.
superjohnmcginlay Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Bell can't bat at 3.Collingwood needs a break as much as Vaughan does. Vaughn too good as a Captain to have a break, he will come good. Team for me: Cook Strauss Vaughan K.P Bell Prior Flintoff Broad Sidebottom Anderson Panesar The batters need to get in and graft, Broad and Anderson showed the top order up yesterday.

Seconded, Prior has scored morre runs than anyone/most in the county championship this year. Edited July 22, 2008 by meite/faye's neighbour
